For a number of reasons I need to move the BT master socket to another room and it makes sense to install a new mounting bracket and re-route the cable on the outer wall at the same time. Is any electrician allowed to do this? Or is it still Openreach only?

It's not a case of no other person can do it its just everything from the master socket back in terms of wiring belongs to openreach.

I have moved two master sockets in my last two houses and even had OR out on one occasion and they said nothing.. probably as they don't actually know where the socket should be or ever was.

Telephone wiring is pretty basic (only two wires for an actual broad band/phone service) so should be much bother to move it.

Anyone can physically move it, there is nothing special about the wiring. However if anything subsequently goes wrong (e.g. line fault) and BT then notice that it has been moved, then possibly questions may be asked.

On the other hand though, as enigma said I don't imagine that BT/Openreach know exactly where every phone socket is meant to be - every time an engineer has visited either my house or workplace, they ask me where the socket is!

If you are getting the socket moved, then look into the new Master Socket 5C / Mk4 faceplate - not sure how long it has been out, but cropped up when I looked for another thread earlier.

Also if there are any future faults and OR find out it's due to you tampering with it then they will bill you for the fix.

Also Im quite sure they don't have records where master sockets are located, especially for sockets installed 30+ years ago like the one in my house possibly was.

The BT engineer doesn't know where master socket is on any property unless he fitted it recently -Don't worry about it.

When I moved here I had electric dropped into duct up drive and while trench was out I put my duct in and put underground cable in - cut overhead wire off house -coiled underground wire on pole just out of reach from anyone and crimped two wires together and put them in waterproof box - been like that for 7 years now.

If anyone asks it was like it when I moved in. ;)

The BT pole must have been right next to your property boundary then. I couldn't see how I could do that as the overhead cable goes to pole across the road. Unless I dug the road up.

You need to make enquiries through this form https://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/ho...on=remove_relocate_external_network_equipment

The official word from Openreach on who owns what is

What happens if I alter your network in any way or don't contact you?
If you don't contact us and an incident occurs because you or your contractors have altered, interfered or tampered with our network you will be held responsible and could face serious consequences. These could include compensation claims, investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and possible criminal charges.
If there is any Openreach plant on a property you'll be working on we're the only people who can move it for you. If you don't contact us and make any alterations, remove or replace fixings, remove drop-wires or lead-ins (temporarily or permanently) or do anything which adversely affects our network this would be classed as trespass and we would take appropriate action against any third party who trespasses on our network.
