Moving from a synology NAS to a diy server questions.

Thanks for all the replies. Think its probably easier and better for my situation to pick up a new Synology NAS. Eyeing up the DS415+ which should last me a long time.

What I'm confused by is that you’re talking about replacing the NAS but not the hard drives?

Is this because the hard drives have been replaced or do you plan on purchasing a new NAS and using your old drives as I just can't understand that if your worried about reliably?

Personally I would just invest in a Microserver running Xpenology and replicate your data there for backup.

Ive got 4x 2TB drives in my current NAS that have enough room for what i need currently but am planning on swapping them out one at a time for 4TB drives and let it rebuild with each drive until they are all 4TB.

I plan now to pull all four drives out of my current nas and stick them directly into new one meaning all data should be intact.

at 4 drives the premium for off the shelf NAS is more worthwhile.

if you do pay a premium for off the shelf nas, i would check closely that the nas doesnt have limited sata support eg...no support 8 tb drives for future proofing...this is often a greater risk with off the shelf.

The 415+ is a cracking little box. I run sabnzbd, couchpotato, sickbeard etc on it. It handles anything I throw at it and I get great transfer speeds. You can also do teaming with the NICs in the latest OS.

i cannot believe this post is still going on but here are a few things...

Backups + data = keep things simple.

You do not over complicate backups or file store, this is your data!

You do not cut corners!
