I prepped my rig recently for a probable 24" purchase and now I am gonna take that plunge .... I am after a monitor that presents at least as good an image and text as my Viewsonic VP171b for as little cost as is necessary ... I was disappointed with the text quality of a Cibox 22" on VGA only that I recently had here for a couple of weeks and I have also closely looked at a VGA only Acer locally in a shop and that was absolute pants in the quality department (the Cibox was better IMHO).

I will use it for coding and writing/viewing documents well as gaming so good text quality is essential!

Any specific recommendations ?

I'd suggest you want to look for a screen with a better resolution vs screen size....ie, a better pixel pitch. If you move from a 17" screen, with a pixel pitch of 0.264mm, to a 22" monitor, with 0.270mm, you will notice a difference in sharpness. Obviously DVI would be good to have for PQ, but you may want to look at some 20" models perhaps if you've found the text / sharpness on 22" models to be lacking...

Hi Blackninja. I have a VP171b-2, have had it for several years, and never had a bad word to say about it. I recently upgraded though, and all I can say is "wow". I've got a Samsung SM226BW alongside it now, and while they're each as sharp as each other, for colour quality, intensity etc, the Samsung just knocks the VP for six. (Yes, I've taken the time to set up each screen).

If you're after sharpness, absolutely stick with DVI. As I say, my vote goes to the Samsung.

Here's a pic of them together
