Ok, So i have bought w7 and im about to install it over my xp on my netbook now....do i need to get drivers before hand? or does windows 7 get them for me? and install them via Windows Update etc?
thanks guys

no you definitely need to check that W7 drivers are actually available before you start this process and remove xp

you need to go tou the driver download area of your model on the manufacturers support page and download all W7 drivers and put them somewhere safe.

You should be able to download them afterwards...

But installing over the top won't work if the win7 is x64 and the xp is x86, you'll need to do it from scratch deleting everything on that drive, but then you can download the drivers afterwards

Doubtful it will be an x64 version on a netbook, though I would always choose the new install option over an upgrade path, its more of a hassle backing up data etc, however I think you will encounter less problems, its also possible you will have to reinstall a lot of programs anyway.

Ok thanks guys i will check out the Acer page.....When i say over the top i meant fresh install from 32bit to Win7 32bit fresh install

I have always been able to get any outstanding drivers through Windows 7 after installing it. 7 has absolutely fantastic driver support out of the box, so to speak.

To be on the safe side you could run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. This should show any known problems with your current hardware. With a netbook I usually try to have at least the network drivers handy in case Windows doesn't have them - though I haven't put 7 on any of the Acer netbooks yet.

Ok thanks Sirius.....
Now i have just created a partition so i can try win 7 and just see what its like on a netbook.....now here is what it looks like....

Is that right? eg is it a logical one and shud i use ntfs etc

you certainly can get the drivers afterwards but downloading becomes an issue if you dont have the network drivers working straight away and / or another computer to download them hence my suggestion.

users attempting this upgrade path must always find out if their drivers have been updated for W7/Vista before migrating their data.

Partition is an excellent idea btw OP.

Well I am out atm but when I gt home I am going to run windows advisor and see if it tells me I will need new drivers.......so is the partition I screenshot I put on my last reply look ok?
Will my net netbook (Acer 531h) be ok to run win 7 ultimate or will I need to run win 7 starter?

40GB is definitely big enough to put win7 onto. Just make sure when you install it on the partition to see if it works that you chose the right partition! It should work fine, but the steps you are taking will definitely prove safely if it will.

Ok I've installed win 7 and it's all good but I'm running out of space so I went back to xp created another partition but how do I add this to the win 7 partition

added ? should have just resized it.
just delete it if nothing is on it and add the available space to the partition that requires it.

If you have a partition for testing then go ahead, if the partitions aren't what you want, reinstall again with new partitions or use a partition manager

Thanks guys i got it all working and now ive got Win 7 on a 80gb partition....now though im thinking of moving to a 320gb hdd.....How do i move my win 7 partition to the 320gb hdd or do i have to install again?
Also if i have to send in my netbook for repairs will Acer be bothered if there is win 7 on there?

They probably would be bothered if it was a software repair, bothered enough to add a charge fee.. but hardware should be fine as far as I know.

You will need to use some imaging software as far as I know to make an image of the entire drive and then extract the image onto the other drive, reformatting the original drive, but not 100% sure, I'd reinstall if it doesn't take that long, I installed my Win7 Ultimate with a USB stick and it took like 10 mins
