moving into my first house on friday, what do i need to do?

Before you do all the things advised, you should christen every room first.

edit: just seen how old this thread is. Still my point still stands.

OK i just found out the current owners are with EDF energy for both electric and gas, i also want to go with EDF so when i phoned them tomorrow is there anything i should say to try and get a good deal?

also i changed my mind about going with sky, i did a broadband checker in that area and 3 people on sky are getting 0.3mb and the virgin users are all on 7.5+.

atm the phoneline is through sky and the owners are keeping their number, where do i stand with the phone line? if i dont phone sky up and tell them im the new owner will i get a bill down the line for not phoning in?

Where are you in South Tyneside? Virgin Media cover this area quite well and I am sitting pretty on 152mb.

Edit:
.. Holy thread necro, Batman!

Set up a forwarding address at the post office - It costs, but well worth it for any subscriptions / mailing lists you completely forgot you were part of.
We still get a ridiculous amount for the previous owners and it's really annoying, especially as some are from HRMC and after hand delivering to their new house twice, you'd think they get the message.

Holy thread revival! :O

Buy something inflatable. Sit on it in the front room :D

I've rented a few places, this is always my checklist that I carry out before even taking my shoes off let alone unpack the car.

  • Take LOTS of photo's, ceiling, walls, sinks, everywhere.
  • Take your own inventory, note everything. Even things like "bath mat", "sink plug" and even "mattress and bed frame". Taking pictures of all items.
  • Clean, I know, weird, I'm a bit of a clean freak so I give the place a good once over with dust and hoover. Also gives you a chance to find any small defects to take pictures of.
  • Sort out gas/electricity/water if it's not covered under rent (my current place is all covered).

That's pretty much it. I always allow for a day moving in simply as I have a lot of crap and I need to drill into walls for my TV and speakers. My current landlord doesn't mind and said as long as I make good when I leave, he doesn't mind. The 6 holes for my 50" plasma and 4 smaller holes per speaker (4) really don't take long to fill and paint over again.

Don't do any work like above without asking first. NEVER assume the LL will be fine with drilling, even for a mirror/picture frame. They often are not.

As for moving in, depending on the setup, I always do electrics first, get them all setup and working. This way you can also get the cables and stuff neat.

Hmm, seems like a lifetime ago now, just reading old posts i've matured a lot since moving out of my folks,

Advice for the OP, dont move out, stay at home and don't worry about bills or moping around asda late at night pushing a trolly...
