Moving OS from one ssd to another?

Hi guys,

I currently have windows 7 installed on my 120gb ssd but want to buy a 60gb ssd and move it to that. There might be a few other little programs installed on the ssd too, but no big files like games or videos etc.

Is it possible to move everything over without losing anything and then rename the new ssd to (C: ) rather than (F: ) seeing as that would be the fourth drive in my PC?

Thanks

You need image/clone it.

I use Acronis True Image as I get it free as a WD HDD owner (do you have a WD drive in PC)?

Someone asked near same last week and another peep chimed in with the Windows built in software to do same but I prefer Acronis True Image.

Why are you downsizing, I had Windows 8 on a 60GB and it gets pretty full easy and if Sandforce controller it looses performance after half full (some other controllers also).

I cloned it to a new 120GB (RMA from Corsair) last month.

Yeah I have two WD's in the PC atm. The only reason for downsizing is so that I can utilise the 120gb ssd and have the OS on a dedicated 60gb one?

Dual booting, I cannot remember what OS need to be installed 1st for it to work or if that was XP and Win7/8.

You would need look it up on a guide.

I see no point in using Win7 if you have 8,1.

I have 8.1 but have only recieved it recently. So my thinking was to dual boot on the 120gb ssd and try it out incase I don't get on with it :)

COD AW will take up most of that 60GB drive, I had a quick search and the requirements for HDD space for PC COD AW is 55GB so it may not even fit on the SSD as with every SSD\HDD you never get the full size.

my Samsung evo is 250GB and I think I get 232GB useable.

as others have said I would keep the bigger drive for the OS as this uses up more space over time, are you able to get another 120GB drive rather than another 60GB drive as im sure these days there is not much cost differ between the 2.

You can make it look 99% like Win 7 and its faster and have a higher DX11.2 build support right now and DX12 in future.

Most newer games/benches are faster in Win 8 but a few still suit Win 7 (you can see in the OCUK game bench threads).

Does a partition need to be made for dual boot to be set up?

In the past yes you partitioned the HDD 1st with 3rd party tools but now the OS can do it at install or you can do within current OS using the Disk Management without 3rd party tools.

TBH its many years since I had to do all this to Beta Test XP/Vista etc for MS as an official tester.

I do not bother now as they never listen to feedback anyhow and the OS's are not as good as before with features ripped out and bugs never fixed.

Why not buy a 250GB SSD for the OS as they are cheap and keep the 120GB for games or vice versa, sell the 60GB as its good for a Cache for someone to use on Intel set up.

Fair enough, so I currently have win 8.1 formatted on a USB, so I need to set the BIOS to boot from USB first and then install win 8.1 to the same ssd as win 7?

make sure its installed on the new partition created and not the same one as your current OS is on

you can use disk management is windows to shrink down your current partition and then create a new 1

Yes, if you say for example shrink the current partition on the SSD by 50GB and then create a new partition to use.

go through the install process as normal but select the new partition you created and not the other one to install 8.1
