Moving out for the first time - Any advice? - Few Questions

Well I dont want a house phone, I dont think you have to have a line with virgin media, its not like ADSL so should just be my normal £30 a month unless I'm mistaken?

Virgins broadband price normally states "only when taken with a phone line at £xx per month".

You are right, you dont need line rental with Virgin. Not sure if it's still the case but when we got Virgin it was cheaper to get a package with a telephone for some reason. We got the line installed and never plugged a phone into it

My Dad is downstairs, thats what he just told me, lol, but he is like 55 years old so, maybe hes losing it now! :D

There used to be Poll Tax instead of Council Tax, but it caused serious riots so the government changed the name and did an advertising campaign. When I was really little it was called Rates.

Think thats just for promotions so people get it cheaper, I've always just got broadband, since being with NTL and now virgin media. I never wanted the phone or TV deals, as we always had sky instead.

Agreed. My point is that people perceive the gym as a luxury and if money is tight, they will stop their gym based fitness regime in a heartbeat but happily maintain other luxuries, like going out drinking.

I don't think looking after your health, however you choose to do it, is a luxury :)

Yeah mate, I would never give up the gym! hell no! the gym comes first in my life, everything else 2nd. I'm still going to be going when am 60!!

My flat is managed by an agent so I got a couple of extra fees:

Deposit + First months rent + moving in fee + reference check fee

Quidco/TopCashBack are good for setting up new utilities, insurance, phone lines, internet etc. When I started living on my own I saved a lot of money in my first year by doing that; my broadband cost for the year was £17 after cashback, for example.

Poll tax and Council tax are both different as well in the way the tax is charged. Poll Tax was charged against individuals therefore if you had four adults in a household the tax would be charged four times. Council Tax is charged against the household therefore only a single rate is charged no matter how many adults live in a household.
