Moving phone/fibre points

I would do what I suggested..

Personally I'm not a fan of extending the connection to the modem.

In an ideal world we'd all have the modem router right next to the master socket, and it's certainly something to aim for.

If, as in the OP's case, the master socket is in a really stupid position then there's nothing wrong with a correctly wired extension. The difference in sync will be minor and the convenience will more than compensate for the slight drop in speed.

Adding perhaps 0.5% of extension to the existing cabling, using high quality copper cable and correct terminations will not have a noticeable effect on sync speed. The OP has been pretty clear that the modem cannot be placed next to the master socket, repeating it doesn't make it any more of an acceptable option.

In a previous house I put a couple of Cat6 outlets on the wall (boxed-in soil stack) right next to my master socket, and ran them up through the loft and down into the cupboard under the stairs using another conveniently placed boxed in set of pipes. And then ran a couple more back out of this cupboard into the living room directly above. The Openreach modem lived on the wall next to the master socket, and was patched into an AirPort Extreme. That's an ideal setup but not everyone can do it.

Just thought I'd report back with the results. Just spent the evening installing the cable (sore thumb now!). Anyway - working perfectly! Ran a speed and ping test before and after and there is no difference in either :)

Thanks ever so much for all your help everyone!

Well thanks to you and Caged I clearly got the right sort!

Just hooked us the NAS this morning and sorted the ethernet cables in the study and it's all sorted and working as well as I hoped. All that's left if to tidy up the cables for the modem and router as they currently just look like a pile of electronics.
