I've always liked the idea of moving to America, but how hard would it be to become a prison guard or police officer over in the states ? Would It be any harder than becoming a police officer in the uk ?

Do you have family in the USA or dual citizenship? If not the hardest part would be getting a visa, like propper hard and UK citizens cannot apply for the green card lottery.

First big step is actually living here. Then don't expect to be paid very well either.

Don't know your whole story, but........no chance! :)

You realize you can't just move to the US and look for work, right?

Are you already a cop or prison guard? If so, maybe there is an "exchange program" type thing you could look into - that would give you a flavor of what it's like to live/work over here.

As said, if you have family in the US that would make it easier.

Otherwise, find another dream I'm afraid.

I looked into applying to be an Officer in the NOPD. The hours suck, the money sucks, the people suck, the corruption sucks and the high probability of being shot at on a daily basis sucks.

So, if you have the legal right to work in the US and are not an unemployable automaton army veteran, another career choice might be worth considering.

It's not easy to move there at all. Unless you are rich or have family there. Some police forces do transfer programs though, but you obviously already have to be in the police here.

Canada is much easier to get into.

I did the jump.. Mind you I had to put $400k on the line to do so, not really knowing what would happen. 8 yrs of not knowing actually.. BUT !!!!! it paid off late last yr, my wife and i both rec'd our greencards.. No getting kicked out now !

Forget what you're thinking. To be a cop, you need to be a citizen of the US. Best route into the country is what i did, which is an Investment Visa, E2, start up or buy an existing business, hope it does well, However, this doesn't lead to a GC. To get a GC, have either you or your wife get a job and find sponsorship. wait the 6+yrs, hope you don't get laid off, or marry an American once you're out here, and cut through all the red tape.

So bottom line, unless you have money and are not afraid of a little entrepreneurship , or are lucky enough to work for a company who's willing to transfer you, OR have an American g/f who's willing to marry you, then probably best forgetting about it.. BUT it can be done, and I'm living proof that it can so good luck !

I just sent off my application for citizenship in the States :) So hopefully in a couple of months (assuming it takes that long) I'll have dual citizenship :D

get a job as a prison officer here, then you can pretty much get into canada, USA no chance. I know lots of ex-colleagues who went to canada as prison officers, but pay sucks compared to here

Assuming you a British citizen getting a visa virtually impossible. You need sponsorship, ie someone willing to give you a job before you move. Doubt the prisons are recruiting over here!
