Moving to Australia...

Agreed - I went to Canada through a company which helps you with the process and gets you a job. It cost almost £600 in the end, and in hindsight I could have got all the stuff together myself (Although it was nice to know I could call them with any questions at any time).

To be fair for £600 that really doesn't seem bad - hand holds you all the way through the process AND finds you a job (assuming job is relevant to your profession, and you're not going to be a qualified accountant being asked to stack shelves) - I'd be quite happy to hand that over for the convenience.

To be honest, I don't massively regret it - It was the first time I'd ever moved to another country before, and there's a lot of paperwork/admin to get together. Having them available to talk to over the phone at any point of the process was a huge bonus, and set my nerves at ease about the whole thing.

Do you like big spiders?

Enjoy the big spiders.

Thankfully the Northern Territory doesnt have as much in the way of 8 legged beasties. Most of the stuff to avoid is in the water.

One thing to bear in mind about Australia is the range of different climates in various regions.

My sister has recently returned from 18months in Australia. When she was living in a shared house she spent two days locked in her room because there was a huge spider outside of her bedroom door. She wedged a towel under the bottom of the door and didn't leave until her housemate came back from a weekend away and got rid of the spider. Fortunately she had an en-suite and a mini fridge full of chocolate....

It's a beautiful country (Especially British Columbia). Lived there for two years - Would love to make the permanent move one day!

If you have any questions, feel free to get me in Trust!

Yeah, unless you have a particularly difficult case then there is no need to go through a company. It's essentially paying hundreds of quid for someone to double check your application. We had a meeting with one at the beginning of our process and decided they just weren't worth it.

Also worth pointing out is that they cannot make the application to any faster. The person we spoke to specifically said it would take something like 6 months rather than 2 years of we went with him. Aside from being (I believe) against his licence to say that there is no way they can speed up the process. Once it goes to Mississauga it's out of everyone's control.

I'd be interested to know what help you go finding a job however. Did it work? Was it just help with a resume and how the system works or did they actually find you a job. If the latter was it a professional* job or something like truck driving/construction.

*i.e. Continuation of your career in a specific sector.

I would definitely take at minimum a 3 week holiday out in Australia before making any kind of decision. The wife and I really thought we might get the bug when we went out and stayed with family friends who live just outside Brisbane. I work in I.T. and she is a teacher so we had the credentials. We had a lovely time out there but got to see everyday life and we were both in agreement that OZ was not for us.

The most important thing is to experience the everyday in any place you intend to live.

Out of interest what was not for you? I've only been on holiday for a few weeks there a d my sister lives there but I don't see it being much different every day to the UK. Just as Canada is little different.

I get this impression a lot of people emigrate because they have this idea that everything is going to be so much better, rather than having to deal with the same old drudge (work, taxes, bureaucracy etc), just in a different place to explore.

They helped with everything regarding the job - They assisted with a Resume (as it is different to a CV) and setup the interview, which was in London. It wasn't a professional job by any means though... It was a Working Holiday Visa, and it was a Ski Rentals gig (Accommodation Included). Worked my six (poorly paid) months, and then got a professional job on my own afterwards :D

It's free to ask on British expats... (And just fill in/read the forms CIC provide)

As I thought then. Probably not going to help if you emigrate and want a "proper" job.

As I said, it was for a "Working Holiday". Not what you'd want if you wanted to make a permanent move. Nonetheless, it got me out there - Was there for 2 years and got an opportunity to be sponsored for a full move if I wanted

Ah no, good for a working holiday, I'm not disputing that. I just can't see them helping you find a job if you went over there on a skilled or spousal visa. That's what I meant.:)

Haha no, they're there for the easy money :p Honestly made me think about setting up a business doing what they do - They must make so much money, and all it is is helping with the admin and making phone calls :p

I LOVE Germany, I LOVE Berlin, but unfortunately their winter is as ****e as ours and offices will be pumped with central heating.

I also speak German.

You do realize that a lot of places in Australia have cold wet winters as well?
