Hey. :)

Let me summarise the last twelve months of my life.....

  • Started new job in the North East - England.
  • Met partner, who's from Glasgow, at work.
  • Got Engaged.
  • Partner moved from Glasgow to North East - England.
  • Partner and I expecting first child.
  • I've been promoted.
  • Moving back to Glasgow for new job in four weeks.

So, as you can see, it's been a busy twelve months. To top it off, we're moving back up to Glasgow in four weeks time....

With one notable problem, we don't currently have a house!

We're presently renting and I have tendered my notice to the existing landlord. I start my new job first week in September.

We've applied to GHA (Glasgow Housing Association) but they have basically said they can't give us an idea of when we will secure a property.

We have considered private renting, but not sure whether thats currently an option as our cash flow is quite low at present due to the purchase of a new car.

So, just really after some tips, advice and suggestions surrounding the whole move.

Also, if anyone on here lives in Glasgow, can perhaps recommend any other decent social housing providers in the area?

Worst case means spending a week or so with my partners parents, but obviously this is not really an option.

Don't do it!!! ;)

What area you looking at?

Hmm, well the missus is from Drumchapel, but I'm not a big fan of the area lol.

I don't know that many areas, so difficult to say, her auntie lives off Great Western Road, in some flats, and they're not bad.

Our office is slap bang in the City Centre.

Have you considered the outlying towns, like Motherwall? I think there is better places to bring up a kid that in the centre of glasgow.

Well, wherever we consider, it is only short term i.e. 6 - 12 months. But you're right, I don't want to live somewhere where I require a bullet proof vest as Gurkha remarked :)

It's not that bad don't worry. I did a similar move when I met my wife-to-be. We met and within 6 months were married, then we moved up north from the south east of England. We managed to find a house that suited us within a weekend, and moved a few months later. I don't know Glasgow particularly well even though I'm only a 40 minute drive but I'd recommend nearby villages or towns within an easy commute. Although it does take some getting used to, it was the best move I ever made.

I'd be happy to live on the outskirts, but the missus is a Glaswegian through and through, and I probably won't be able to drag her too far away!

Plus, budget is an issue, and no doubt the further away I go, the more money I will have to part with.

I think you'll find you will have to part with more money the closer you are to Glasgow.

Sorry I can't help more than this, but in another thread it states that Glasgow has the highest amount of laziness in the uk

And the 2nd highest stab rates in Europe!

I would be looking on the outside areas of Glasgow.

Motherwell aint a bad area anymore and still very central.

I think you are going to be quite shocked when you see what the Glasgow Housing Association are going to be offering you. If you want something for Sept you will need to go down the homeless route and even at that I don't know how they will look at it because your working.

I would look into South Lanarkshire if I was you.

A few have mentioned Motherwell. There are a few bad areas here as well that you don't want to be living in.

Glasgow has a reputation for being a bit rough but it's the same as everywhere else. If your looking for trouble you will find it. If your minding your own business then it's all good.

there are bad areas everywhere, no matter what the size of the town/city is.

Have a look at places like motherwell, hamilton, east kilbride, paisley, coatbridge and airdrie.

Im moving up to Blantyre in a few months, to a fairly rough area, but should be fine as its on the edge.

anyhoo, good luck with the move and finding a place :)

I'll be down to stab you remember!

For a flat near great western road your looking at 600 quid a month at least I'd imagine. Think my brother was paying 400ish for quite a big flat in central Hamilton.

As kieran says there is bad bits and good bits,West end of glasgow is about 10 times as nice as any other. Some of the southside is nice but the east end up quite a dump.

The areas in the West End are pretty good with excellent transport links to the city centre. Anywhere around Byres Road, Great Western Road and Woodlands Road is fine apart from the high level of student accomodation.

You could also try looking to the West Coast (Inverkip, Weymss Bay, Skelmorlie and Largs) as it's only a 45 minute commute to Glasgow or you could try somewhere closer like Erskine which has very good motorway access and is only a 20 minute commute.

Ignore the comments about Glasgow being some sort of scary place. Glasgow is no worse than any other city and if you don't go looking for trouble, it's unlikely to come looking for you. Glasgow has loads of shopping areas and the best pub and club scene outside of London. What's not to enjoy?

As your partner is from Glasgow then they should have a fair idea of good areas already and all that remains to be done is to have a look around and see what you like.

I lived in Glasgow for thirty years and although I staggered home drunk on many occasions as well as walking home from work five nights a week(nightclub) at 4am, I have never been subjected to any verbal abuse never mind being attacked. The only reason I moved to Inverkip was for some peace and quiet away from city life but I still miss living within the City Centre and will probably move back at some point in the future. As the saying goes, I belong to Glasgow.
