Ill be moving to The Nethlands for a Month in summer......

What i want to know, is do a lot of dutch speak german, as that my native language,

Would it be worth me buying a car to use overthere,

Also input any of your experiences of the country :p

The netherlands is awesome. There's actually some beautiful gardens and other nice things to say. a lot of them speak english, but as to german, I'm not sure how widespread it is. You'll probably find you can get by speaking german, but just as likely using english will make your life easier.

There's plenty of regular train services. You'd be much better off getting a bike, very handy to have around, as there's plenty of bike paths e.t.c

Ant

Where are you going to stay, the lieden/wassenaar/den hague area is by far the best, although I might be a bit biased :o . On the plus side around here basically everybody speaks english.

I wouldn't recommend speaking German in the Netherlands. If you have to choose between speaking English or German speak English every time. Most Dutch people speak very good english and enjoy being able to use it. German can cause offence (not all the time obviously but it does happen - Advice given based on the fact that I lived in Germany but very close to the border and spent a large amount of time every other weekend in the Netherlands). English is so widely spoken that all the English/American films and shows on TV (and often in cinemas) are subtitled rather than dubbed.

Wassenaar is where it's at tbh :p

You'll be able to get by with speaking enlish no problem at all.
It's pretty rare to find a dutch person that speak english, from my experiences.

I worked in Heerlen, Zuid (South) Limburg, for 3 years. Loved it. We could get BBC1 and BBC2 on the TV alongside the Dutch channels. Most (nearly all in fact) people speak very good english. The only ones who don't seem to be the older people.

I found most of the Limburgers in that area didn't like the Germans very much, but were quite happy to drive over the border, which was close, for petrol as it was cheaper!

Have a good month, you'll love it.

Anyway, i plan on staying with a lady in eindhoven, any other suggestions?

Shame its Endhoven, horrible city,

as for language, English is spoken pretty much by everyone.

Cars are expensive due to a luxury tax, get a bike, every bugger over there has a bike.

Where did you live Muban, if you don't mind me asking?

I've spent a tremendous amount of time over there for work. The people are great and friendly and speak excellent english. Useful to learn a few words of Dutch though (not German - seriously bad idea - edit: just saw Muban said the same thing :o).

They like their pancakes, ham and cheese over there too - they haven't got the healthiest of diets really ;) I only know Alblasserdam, Amsterdam and Rotterdam as that is where the shipyards are that I've worked at. However I have yet to come across a nasty Dutchman. :)

The girls are pretty too :)
