Moving to the UK and getting a licence

Hi guys, I'm moving to England early next month. I have an Irish provisional licence that will not be valid in the UK.
Really all I want is something that will entitle me to take lessons with a driving instructor. Can I apply for a provisional licence right away or must I wait until I'm in the country a few months?

ISTR you can apply right away.

It talks about having to be a resident for 185 days before doing a test.

So I can get a provisional right away but must wait 6 months to do a test?

If that's the case no problem as I'm sure I will need many lessons before attempting the test
