I have just got a new car so I've moved from my kenwood mp3-cd + mp3 usb harddisk to an oem sony 6cd system, but I want to be able to still use my mp3 collection without putting in a new headunit. *double* din ftl cost-wise.

I know I could just get an mp3 player and use the aux, but then I wouldnt be able to use any of the navigation on the headunit, and would have to fiddle with the player instead :/

Is there anything I can do to avoid this? If not, which players have the easiest navigation, and nicest screens?

Thanks.

Why dont you use the kenwood mp3 headunit you already own?

it's single din. mondeo 'needs' a double din. plus if i took it out, there would be a big hole in the car that I need to sell ;)

Plus the fact the headunit is CD, not DVD, and I cba to mess around with CDs.

If I could get my kenwood mp3 disk to work with the sony oem thing, then great. However, I only know about the aux on the sony headunit, and that wont work.

You can get adaptors allowing you to put a single din radio in.
Not got the original radio? Or pick up a cheap one off ebay?

ok, well that gives me more choices I guess :)

I'm not sure that I want to replace the mondeo headunit though.

If the keg wont work with any other HU, then I might be better off taking the kenwood HU out of my focus so I can sell the HU+disk together, and put a cheapo aftermarket HU back in.

for reference, this is exactly the same kit that I have: thebay

buy one of those short range FM transmiters that you tune the radio into and then you can listen to the MP3 player, there are quite a few around now as they are about to be made legal at long last

is there any advantage of this over the aux-in?

No other than the lack of the wire. Problem with these transmitters is the quality is much lower and in towns you'll constantly pick up other folks music as you drive by as the number of channels is limited.

Best solution is the aux in if you can't use a customised ipod connector. You may be able to buy an ipod cradle that has the aux lead and a power feed as well so you can charge at the same time.

nope, and quite a few disadvantages tbh. I tried the FM route and it became a real pita - the AUX is your most obvious/easiest option, and a dash mounted cradle for it maybe?

My suggestion, would be to get a DIN adapter, downsize your fascia to a normal size, and invest in a good headunit - the JVC AVX is meant ot be very nice, DVD player, and plays MP3s off of a DVD.

Dont own one myself (i own a Pioneer AVIC-X1R) but they seem good value...

Other than no wires...no :p I use the aux-in and you get excellent quality sound since its direct from the iPod and therefore no interference :)

Headunit: Pioneer P4800MP

BeatMaster :D

Thanks for the replies.

I will see if I can borrow my brother's mp3 player and see how fiddly it would be driving with that in the aux.

Looks like I might need to go the fascia adapter route. Before I start looking at single din HUs, I better find out what colour illumination my dash is! ;)
