Yes, you heard right - MP3...

It's my bro in laws 40th towards the end of November and I need something to play back his MP3's that are on an SD Card. His last music player was literally one of the old iPods with a wheel. He's not clued up on tech so he owns a Sony XM5 (he almost bought Beats) which is a bit overkill but it'll do. Currently trying to explain to him that MP3 is old hat and he can better utilise his gear with more modern formats.

I would like to get him a basic player that can play his MP3's but also FLAC's. He doesn't know the difference between SBC and LDAC codecs but I would like something to utilise his headphones via BT as well as possible since he wishes to listen to music whilst on a treadmill. The last music player I had was an iRiver and Cowon thing from like 20years ago so I am out of touch. Does anyone have any recs? The FiiO Snowsky Echo or Disc models seem fitting but they seem to use SBC and I don't know what the UI is like yet. The Hiby R1 is also hugely popular.

Essentially I am looking for:
SD Card capable
BT Capable with SBC as a min
MP3 and FLAC or more support

I like my Hiby R1 enough to buy one for my wife so she wouldn't nick mine. The sound quality is great for such a small player that's at the entry level of the market. They still develop the firmware, and there's several mods that give you other variants (such as the Sonix player). There's a big thread at Head-fi if you want to know what users think.

There's a couple of different packs, one is just the bare player, one comes with earphones and a SD card (the R1 has no storage). It's not as cheap as the Chinese market place stuff you find everywhere, but it is from a company that actually is in the business of these DAPs, not just something shiny that is buggy and never gets any support before disappearing.

For something at that pricepoint, IMO there's not a lot that can beat it.

That does look fun I must admit, already have 4 players tho.:o:p

It takes all the boxes OP wants. Micro SD card, FLAC, Bluetooth. It's also small and tactile, which if you come from iPod, you will feel more at home. It's not the same as the iPod controls exactly, I recall there are the wheel doesn't press down and you need to press the middle of the circle to "enter". But it is aluminium in the same design.

Ooo, thank you chaps. That Fosi looks so tempting...for me! I think the Hiby will suffice for him but I'll ask him what he prefers and just purchase it for him because toys like this are a personal choice really.

Good idea, apart from the form factor, buttons etc the software it runs is can also be a factor.
