I searched for MPC-HC but no such luck.. If anyone uses this software, it's been updated

Changes from 2.3.1 to 2.3.2:

Updated LAV Filters to version 0.79.2-18-ga7212
Updated MediaInfo to version 24.06
Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.8.4.2263
Changes/additions/improvements:

The video is now paused/unpaused automatically when dragging the seekbar. Can be turned of in advanced settings for old behavior.
Now writes MultiSelectModel value in file association ProgIDs. This allows opening a selection of up to 100 files, instead of Windows default limit of 15.
Fixes:

A few small fixes.

Overview of features
A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about:

Play HDR video
This requires using either MPC Video Renderer (MPCVR) or madVR.
These renderers can be selected here:
Options > Playback > Output
With other video renderers, the colors will be wrong!
MPCVR is now included. MadVR needs to be installed separately. MPCVR also supports Dolby Vision. MadVR does not.
For optimal performance you should change the hardware decoder to D3D11 in LAV Video Decoder settings when using MPCVR on Windows 10/11, because this renderer uses DirectX11.
The installer of MPC-HC is very basic (and that will not change).
I therefore recommend using K-Lite Codec Pack. That includes MPC-HC and other essential components. It has a very advanced installation that can automatically create file associations, and helps you with easy configuration of important MPC-HC settings.
The Standard version should be sufficient for most people. Use Full version of you like to use MadVR.
Modern GUI Theme (Dark or Light)
Options > Player > User Interface
It is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons.
Video preview on the seekbar
Options > Player > User Interface > Hover type
Ability to search for subtitles
Press D for manual search.
Or enable automatic search in: Options > Subtitles > Misc
Adjust playback speed
Menu > Play > Playback rate
The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%):
Options > Playback > Speed step
Adjusting playback speed works best with the internal audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction.
Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer
MPC-HC can remember playback position, so you can resume from that point later
Options > Player > History
You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel.
You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown.
You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player.
Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting)
Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only)
A-B repeat
You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers.
You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video
Menu > View > Pan&Scan
This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below).
There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well.
Options > Player > Keys
Tip: there is a search box above the table.
You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites
Put yt-dlp.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder.
Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL
You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy
Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder.
Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced
This includes an option to specify the location of yt-dlp.exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder.
Note 1: You also need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
Note 2: yt-dlp nightly build (very latest version made daily)
Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc.

Used to use it until development took a hiatus and i moved to MPC-BE, since development restarted I've always wonder/struggled to notice many differences between the two. At least any that really effect someone like me who just installs, changes a few obvious settings, and plays videos.

I tried following on of those guides once on how to configure things for better quality playback and it ended up being a ton of faffing around for something i wasn't sure made much of a difference.

I went for BE years ago as it was still being updated and had video preview on the progress bar.

Seems HC has been updated to include this and has LAV filters included which are meant to improve picture quality and decoding efficiency so will give it a bash

Any of you guys know how to run two instances of MPC-HC at the same time? Simply trying to launch a second instance via a desktop icon doesn't seem to work. Sometimes I want to play two videos side by side to compare. I do it at the moment with one MPC-HC and one VLC window, but would rather just use MPC-HC.

BTW, I'm always confused when I got to download MPC-HC for a new machine and I see that it says it is discontinued, and the MPC wiki says the last version was v1.7.13 from 2017, but then on the same wiki page it says the current stable release is v2.3.x from June 2024, which my current install always prompts me when new versions are released.

Go into options and select " Open a new player for each media file played "

Probably the current developer doesn't have access to correct the original site. The one linked in OP seems to be forked from the original project: https://github.com/mpc-hc/mpc-hc

I oddly went the reverse from MPC-BE and back to MPC-HC, the playlist window, resizing and scrolling is problematic if you cue up multiple video files on BE.

With HC installed however its just works as it should, have been using MPC now for probably 10+ years it feels and only use the LAV filter pack and Mpcvideo renderer last few years since I tested and found the Mpcvideo renderer is excellent for low wattage during video playback especially compared to high energy watt sucking MadVR or K-lite codec packs, its these small things that many don't pick up on.

Is Madvr still a thing?

MPC-BE > MPC-HC purely because it's dark themed.

MPC Video renderer is also excellent, has all the features any video player needs inc RTX Video Super resolution and full HDR passthrough inc Dolby Vision etc.

It also triggers Windows HDR mode when a HDR video is opened, something none of the other players do IIRC.

Also no codec pack is needed with mpc-be.

The latest MPC-HC build in OP has all of this, and no codec pack needed. :D

But does it come in black????????????????

BE is the same as HC, just in black, which is the correct theme to have :p

I'll try out HC again if BE ever stops being updated, but they are both basically doing the same thing running the same underpinnings so will continue with BE as I've got it all set up working great.

If only i knew what those settings did. :)

And no I'm not kidding, that's always been my problem with things like MPC-HC, no matter how much i read about things like texture formats, DXVA12 and D3D11, and Chroma Upsampling/Upscaling/Downscaling i still don't understand what I'm doing when i change things to a point where i can do A/B comparisons. :)

It's like change X, play video, can't see the difference. Does the setting i just changed not apply to this format, size, whatever, or am i just ignorant WRT what i was meant to notice.
