MPC-HC - Release Thread

Any reason to use this over vlc?

I find MPC-HC a bit slicker to use than VLC and some features are better when dealing with more advanced playback, but VLC can play some media MPC-HC can't and likely never will and does have some features like network media functionality which MPC-HC is lacking so I've both installed.

Long term MPC-BE user, I use chocolatey to keep it up to date.

Awesome package manager for windows. I just open cmd as admin . Type in.. choco upgrade all, then it updates all the applications that I've added through that. No more wasting time looking for updates etc :)

I just use winget upgrade --all in powershell to keep apps like MPC-BE updated without having to manually do anything else.

Simples!

But does it come in black????????????????

BE is the same as HC, just in black, which is the correct theme to have :p
Black theme for the player but all the icons are still white :o Also I can't seem to get it to auto associate for all media types in windows i.e. if you want to play MP4 you have to right click on file > select media player, MPC-BE just associates all files during install

If only i knew what those settings did. :)

And no I'm not kidding, that's always been my problem with things like MPC-HC, no matter how much i read about things like texture formats, DXVA12 and D3D11, and Chroma Upsampling/Upscaling/Downscaling i still don't understand what I'm doing when i change things to a point where i can do A/B comparisons. :)

It's like change X, play video, can't see the difference. Does the setting i just changed not apply to this format, size, whatever, or am i just ignorant WRT what i was meant to notice.
Its just for tinkering with you might notice a difference but if you don't know what you're doing just leave at defaults

Icon association is dark here, and open with is always MPC-BE too, mkv example but same applies to all video extensions:

How have you got your MPC (doesn't matter if HC or BE as the same thing) configured :p

Yea that's pretty much what i do, still it would be nice to read technical breakdowns of all the settings. Although I'm guessing that's difficult without having to explain all the finer details of image processing.

Changes from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6:
Updates:

Updated LAV Filters to version 0.79.2-20-g81c56
Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.8.7.2295
Changes/additions/improvements:

MPCVR has been updated to support the display API changes of Windows 11 24H2, so HDR state is now detected correctly when the new "Auto Color Management" option of Windows is enabled.
Improved support for MPCVR exclusive fullscreen. The player now uses the exclusive mode seekbar (OSD based) in that situation.
Fixes:

Several small fixes and improvements.

The logo on MPCHC when you load it first, that is something I designed and they used

Also, make sure you enable hardware GPU decoding as it's set to native (software) by default. This offloads a lot of CPU time to the GPU.

Example playing back a 4K HDR video on a 12700KF:

Native DXVA (software):

DXVA copy-back (hardware):

Lower RAM usage as well as it's going to VRAM instead.

Where to change the settings:

You can see GPU accel is active by hovering over the status bar during playback, it will say software and not have [H/W] next to "Playing" if you're using native decoding:

Edit* Scratch some of that, use D3D11 in that dropdown not DXVA copy-back. I found a glitch using copy-back whereby some high framerate videos stutter (such as my 120fps game recordings) whereas D3D11 mode uses the GPU still and has no such stutter.

Cheers, changed :)

Been using MPC-BE for the last few years, worth switching back to HC or stick with BE?

I did like BE..... but switched back to HC, the playlist is more reliable and easier to use and cue up files for binge watching sessions.

Its ok on BE but tad buggy and you can't always see the full filenames.

Even managing 2nd display and windows on HC is better.

But try both and see which you prefer.

Happy with it so far, only thing I'm missing from BE that I can't find in the HC settings is how to get a subtitles button to show when tracks are available. In BE it shows like this:

If you then click it you can choose with subtitle track to use.

Yeah HC doesn't have the buttons, you have to right click then pick subtitles from there in the audio track sub menu./ not a huge issue though.

I'd stick with BE honestly unless you're desperate for integrated LAV filters I tried HC for a bit but went back to BE its just slicker/more polished product HC is at times pretty rough around the edges

The overall UX is better on HC though, the menus are all dark themes and the player UI itself with more options and better layout of primary controls like hover locations and stuff making the view cleaner.

They both play the exact same files the exact same way too as they use the exact same filters/decoders such as MPC Video Renderer.

Changes from 2.3.6 to 2.3.7:
Updates:

Updated MPC Video Renderer to version 0.8.8.2303
Changes/additions/improvements:

Improved font scaling for text on thumbnail sheet
Manual subtitle style edits now also work with libass
Fixes:

Fixed OSD bug in fullscreen that occurred in 2.3.6
Several small fixes and improvements.
