Hi there,

I am looking to compress my MPEG-2 Recordings into a smaller format such as DIVX for free.

Is there any program that will do this for me?

Thanks...

Virtualdub might be the best program for handling the conversion but you will still need the DIVX codec (which isn't free..... unless you get hold of the XVID codec instead, which is of course freeware.

www.videohelp.com is a good starting point for tools and advice!

For best quality you should be using Nero's Recode 2! That way you can keep full DVD rez, use High Efficiency Audio (5.1), multiple audio streams ie include directors commentary, subs ..etc

Nero's Mp4's are far more modern and advanced than Xvid or DivX which have serious limitations..

Xvid doesnt have any limitations

Anyway I reccomend virtual dub-mpeg, download the klite codec pack as it gives you the divx codec for free, I would reccomend using xvid though, its much better.

Divx is free with the klite codec pack.

Xvid gives better image quality, espically in dark scenes, the colours also look better, this at at higher bitrates but I assume people wont be encoding videos at 500Kbps. Its why everyone uses it for movies on bittorent.

The main thing I wanted to do was compress the files as much as I can without loosing any real quality. I don't care about 5.1 etc.....

Does anyone know the best free codec to use under these circumstances?

Xvid is the best free codec, the best container is mkv though avi will be fine for your needs.

Can I buy a set top player for Nero MP4's?

Yes!!
http://ww2.nero.com/nerodigital/enu/DVD_Player_Recorder.html

http://www.iodata.com/usa/products/products.php?cat=HNP&sc=AVEL&ts=2&tsc=&sc=AVEL&pId=AVLP2/DVDLA

+ A cheap Xbox with XBMC plays Mp4's NP what-so-ever

MP4 supports all kinds of multimedia content, multiple audio-, video-, subtitlestreams, pictures, variable-framerates, -bitrates, -samplerates...) and advanced content like 2D and 3D animated graphics, user interactivity, DVD-like menus.

Nero Digital MP4 is a far newer and better container/codec than Xvid/DivX/Avi ...... FACT
