MPEG-2 to DIVX

Thanks for coming back with a reply Mr Error, but I don't have the desire to start hacking about inside my Xbox just yet.... but I did read somewhere that a German firm have worked with Nero to create a suitable player - the firm is called Elta and the player is the 8815 (I think) and it should be available soon....ish.

While I accept your comments about MP4 in terms of its greater ability, I find DiVX to be like VHS, a quick but not-so-perfect solution that fits the bill.

+ A cheap Xbox with XBMC plays Mp4's NP what-so-ever

MP4 supports all kinds of multimedia content, multiple audio-, video-, subtitlestreams, pictures, variable-framerates, -bitrates, -samplerates...) and advanced content like 2D and 3D animated graphics, user interactivity, DVD-like menus.

Nero Digital MP4 is a far newer and better container/codec than Xvid/DivX/Avi ...... FACT

Xvid isnt a container its a codec, xvid supports all those things and more with a good container as do all other codecs, the best container is matroska.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_container_formats

As you can see nero mp4 doesnt support as many video and audio codecs as other containers, matroska and mov containers are superior.

As for the codecs they are just normal mpeg4 asp and avc codecs which sometimes perform better than xvid but not always. Nero digital isnt supported by most devices out and you have to use neros own encoder so you dont have as much flexibility. Its only major advantage is that its faster.
