MPG - sound reasonable?

To the OP, if you were getting 50mpg and feel this is now around 40mpg I would seriously recommend a service and or MOT to ensure everything is okay. If you've got a motor savvy family member/friend then I'd get them to check out your vehicle too. Depending on your mileage, 10mpg difference could be a killer. Even if your mileage is low it's still an unnecessary expense.

I might give it a good going over myself. New aux belt is definitely on the agenda soon with that I might replace the oil and filters. Sparks wont need done I'd imagine, they are barely 6 months old. New tyres, too. I also bought new suspension and brake components which I just haven't had a chance to replace mainly due to the weather.

You're right, though. I just get an awful feeling money is leaving the car somewhere.

Still, around 40mpg with a heavy load for well over 200 miles seems okay'ish?

seems ok, with a smaller engine the weight you carry makes a much bigger impact than on a larger engine, especially with petrols that have less torque
