Is it worth me brimming my tank with a 5p off a litre voucher or will I loose the savings lugging around all the fuel ?

Audi A4 2.0tdi
70l tank
Drive about 4-500 miles a month

I always just do it. I believe you still end up making a saving, lugging around a full tank of fuel isn't going to cost you 5p/l.

What's hateful about that engine?

It's really noisy, it vibrates through the interior, its just.. urgh, its a 4 cylinder diesel. It's benefit is that it's very economical so if you do lots of miles this benefit outweighs the disadvantages.

But if you only do 100 miles a week surely you don't need to put up with sounding like you are driving a Transit Van rather an an Executive Saloon?

When I last drove one it wasn't that noisy and it went like the clappers, I reckon you must have sampled a bad one...

It 'went like the clappers'?

Had you just driven it out of the back of a C130 transport plane? :p

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with them for high mileage drivers - infact its a fairly good choice, but if you do low miles you get all the downsides with none of the benefits.

Brim the tank but remove surplus items from your car to offset the weight. For example any unnecessary items in your boot (winter kit, clothes, shovel etc), orange hazard triangle thing, fire extinguisher, car jack and wrench kit, spare wheel. Then remove any other excess unused items, perhaps your back seats, they are heavy and if its only you in the car you certainly dont need them in there...

lol... Yes it went well, loads of torque, no need to swop gears hunting for power band or scream the nuts off it to get it to go, for what it is, it's a good quick motor.

I have the 170ps version of that engine and it doesn't "go like the clappers". It's certainly brisk and capable but it's 170hp and you can certainly tell.

However...

Maybe he doesn't care? :p

Remove the soundproofing too and fit lexan windows. No need for electric windows or aircon either (aircon units are heavy) manual windows will be fine.

It's quite interesting to hear that, on the Audi form I keep an eye on they all talk about this engine like it's the second coming. I've been thinking about changing my 2.0T for one as I do about 1500 miles a month, not sure I can bring myself to do it though.
