However, the intesting tit bit is this

However, Conservative MEP Chris Heaton-Harris said the idea would breach employment legislation....

But Mr Heaton-Harris said: "There is no way sport will get an exemption from employment law."

Now either this muppet is deluded, and nobody else is thinking what he is. But how the hell else does Cricket manage to limit English county teams to only 1 foreign player then ?

if its against "employment regulations" ?

Man Utd would likely be okay, but some other teams would struggle.
Personally I don't care, I'd rather have better standard of foreigners playing than a lower standard of homegrown players.

Its easy the mp doesnt know what he is talking about.

Any team could employ as many foreign players as they want and give them jobs.
That team just wouldnt be able to take part in the Premier league or the Uefa cup.
As its not the leagues giving the people the jobs and those squads with more than the specified amount of players would not be eligible.

Nothing stoping that team playing 11 foreign players agaisnt the fox and hound though.

Nothing at all.

Thread closed.

There is no problem having Foreign players but most of them now are just average and taking places of English players and English players coming through the academy, there is hardly any players getting a chance in first teams now from the academy and its all down to money, teams don't want to give youngsters a chance risking losing games when they can buy in a 25 year old foreign for a few million that plays the next week.

But the premiership is another story, with its big business buying clubs just for a quick buck.

There'd be less joy from European competitions, our top players wouldn't be as good or as experienced as they are, our league would have less money coming into it and would be less of a global brand...

Bad idea.

Agreed and the balance has to be struck to ensure the top clubs are still able to attract the top foreign talent yet still have an obligation to their home grown players. At the moment I don't think the balance is there

The quality of the league would deteriorate as well, we would be back to the early nineties (just after the ban) where our top sides would be getting a spanking in Europe.

What we need to do is to drastically improve the coaching methods given to kids at a young age and get rid of the some of these silly rules (e.g. 90min rule) which is making things worse. Most of the top managers here have moaned about it but the FA are not responding. Too many non-Football people running the show there who are good at running businesses but don't have a clue about football. I remember reading that between the age of 11-16 is where they must learn the basics and be good at those but that is where the standards in this country are poor.

Indeed you have, for some strange reason I'd read that as "There'd be less joy from watching European competitions"

I agree. I'm currently coaching under 6's and doing my FA Badge stuff. The problem is that the FA think grass roots football stops at semi pro level in terms of funding and resource. A lot more should be done to make sure the kids get coached the skills necessary to become competent players.

To be fair to the FA, when you review their coaching material it is quite good and it really does encourage the right behaviour. Its just not getting to the right people as it should do.

Trevor Brooking has been moaning for ages about the coaching of younger players but his comments are just falling on deaf ears. The FA would rather pass the blame onto somebody else rather than take responsibility and do something about it.

Things are changing, at least they are at the top EPL clubs. A lot of the top EPL clubs now have specialist youth coaches and its became a position of value, the problem is we're 20 years behind countries like Holland. Before a youth team managers job was just another step on the ladder to becoming a first team manager and they were therefore concentrating on short-term results and not on developing the players.

No the FA are seeing the coin, it will be to late if the premiership becomes a crap league with other demand wages and uber football.

There is nothing stopping lower league football becoming great, but even the lower leagues have a lot of foreign players.

Im with Loki on this (not necessarily against any other comments though)

All these billions spent and its really not getting where its needed

How about premiership clubs somehow asked / forced to invest in local clubs - while this may mean a Derby Under 10 club being given less than one in Liverpool lets say, it would still be thousands more than they would be getting now.

Ok maybe this may create other problems but the money is arround and really at present is being wasted
