Unusual one!

Ive wanted a desktop type Mr Whippy Soft Icecream machine for about 15 years and promised myself one "when I was rich" as you do. Well I can afford one now and have started looking seriously.

This will be for home use and I want the taste to be like you get from the vans. Can I get away with a cheaply one? £100 or do I need to spend the £1200 +

Any recommendations?

It's not worth it - even the expensive ones. The mixes only come in large sizes (like 1 litre min) so for one ice cream you'll need to use 1l of mix (once open they HAVE to be used or thrown away). 1l of mix is about £2.50, so £2.50 for one ice cream. Then you've got to wait 2hrs for it to "ice up" before you can dispense an ice cream. Then after that you need to let it cool down, clean it and sterilise it (ice cream makers are great breeding grounds for e.coli and salmonella).

So, to summarise, expensive, wasteful and a pain in the ***.

Now, if you got one to use at functions such as bbq's, birthdays etc then it MIGHT make somes sense, but otherwise, just go to a shop or wait for a van to come round and buy an ice cream :-)

Or become an ice cream van driver and get as much ice cream as your heart desires!

Just buy a ice cream from a ice cream man when he comes to your street or buy it from shops or do that instant icecream trick from utube.

Get proper ice cream made from milk etc not the cheap tubs of chemicals for fake ice cream then use a blender briefly on it to smooth it then use a cake decorating thing to put it in then do the swirly thing to make it look like a 99. Is probs the best w
At to do it cheap.
