This keeps happening with motorway driving or long distance and its getting me to the point of scrapping it again!. I'm driving along the motorway just fine but accelerate in fifth and it starts to pull back and begins to sound a little bit like a spark plug lead was taken out. I slow down and cruise , put it into fourth try to accelerate and it just won't accelerate correctly. In fourth it begins to sound like a garbled mess out of the exhaust almost as if its chucking too much fuel in , it got so annoying that i had to cruise back , as soon as any amount of boost comes on the car plays up!.

Also to note my petrol went from not far under full tank to just over a half in a 35-40 mile distance , the engine was also incredibly hot like id been thrashing it for 40miles!.

My car constantly idles at 950-1000rpm Hot and when you start up cold 1100rpm , the idle screw is all the way in too :(

What i don't understand is in local driving this doesn't happen however sometimes it feels quick other times it doesn't

3S-GTE engine? What rev?

If so i'd check all the engine electrics (plugs/leads/rotor arm/dizzy cap). Are you running an atmospheric dump valve?

Revision 2 , K reg 1992/93

I've checked the leads but they are not that old , ill check the other bits and no Atmos Bov just the oem

Something is causing the car to put much fuel in and the engine gets VERY hot , like i've thrashed it... What with the idle being too high

If the tubby's have MAF sensors on then, could try giving it a clean? Altho I would've thought idle would be more messed up if that were the case, but could be something as simple?

The Rev 3's have maf sensors

Have you checked for vacuum/boost leaks? What about the o2 and map sensors?

Not sure how i check for boost leaks , ive tried before and its a needle in a haystack :( SO many pipes. Could be the 02 , how many miles do they need to be changed as its the second one now

Thanks for all the replies , more the better :)

Guesswork won't get you anywhere other than to the bank. Take it to a specialist and have them test it with a diag computer.

I've checked the diagnostics and its showing up NO errors. Thus they will aswell , the nearest specialist for my mr2 is MILES away.

Don't include toyota they wont touch my car ;)

Ok so you've bridged the terminals in the engine bay and no error codes have flashed up...

So, under WOT you experience a banging/popping almost like a misfire/rev limiter? What boost are you running? Sounds like you're hitting fuel cut to me....

If not its likely to be one of your ignition components. When I purchased my rev3 3years ago it would misfire under WOT on boost, replaced the ht leads - problem solved.

check your spark plugs, my 200sx would do this under load, turned out i'd melted them with too much boost, replaced with colder plugs and all was fine, could be way off the mark but worth a shot.

Nope not fuel cut as i have a fuel cut defender set just above 16psi , running just over 1bar/15psi boost. Its not banging but this only happens on motorway driving and after a certain period say after 15miles. It just sounds like the car is being choked when the boost comes in.

Lots of hesitation then? Possibly pinkin and running pretty darn lean, would explain why its so hot at that speed.

Yeh lots and again only when i've driven it enough on the motorway , 4fth - 5th gear being the problem area. Not sure if its pinking though :(

Its currently running NKG colder grade spark plugs :)

The 3SGTE is very hard on ignition components. The distributor cap and rotor arm especialy take a serious pounding and can cause a surprising loss of power.

The fact that it's happening in higher gears could also point to fuel starvation, i.e. running weak rather than rich. Mine gave simmilar symptoms just before the fuel pump expired.

I presume you're only running 98RON+ petrol?

I presume you've got an MBC fitted, have you also got an aftermarket boost guage? Are you seeing any spikes / boost creep?

The diagnostics on the 3S-GTE are fairly useless. You can short the terminals in the diagnostic port and then count the flashes of the CEL on the dash to see which error codes are stored, but this won't give you anything too specific.

I had a hell of a lot of trouble with my Turbo a few years ago - turned out the ignition timing was way off. A £5 timing light and 10 minutes of my time fixed it.
