MRI Scan - Anyone had one?

Had a couple on my knee. First was awfull, at Manchester. Scanning process was very uncomfortable since i had to wedge the leg not being scanned into a small gap next to a cage they put round my knee that was being scanned. Had to lie on the bed half hanging on nearly so my knee was in the center of the scanners tunnel. The earphones were naff, uncomfotable and hurt my ears and didnt really block the noise out.
Last one i had was great. Nice big scanner in a new plush suite. Bose earphones to wear, so i had some nice classical music piped to me during the process. could lie flat on the scanner bed as well, no having to contort the body to let them get a good picture. I got away with wearing a tshirt and some cotton 3/4 length shorts.
The images afterwards are great.

To put your mind at ease, just know that the staff treat everyone as units of work. They dont really remember your name, and will hardly remember what you look like after you leave the room. You come, they scan, nothing unusual happens, they wont remember you 5 minutes after you leave the door. Dont worry about your bit being on show, they would have seen it all, countless times, and unless you have something truly remarkable, nobody will even remember.

Yes, the magnets are superconducting magnets, cooled in liquid helium, all 30,000 litres of it, with a magnetic field of 1.5T at the centre, and the whole unit is in a faraday cage/room. Just be damn sure you have no bits of metal ON or IN you. People have died when they got in the way of a flying metal object.

In case anybody cares, those headphones arnt the usual magnetic ones, but receive the sound through a hollow tube, and even batteries for use in the scanning room are speshul non-magnetic batteries that cost 8 pounds per battery.

Im glad I didnt read your post frosty before the scan or I would have NEVER had it done lol

So I went in with boxers, vest, socks and gown. Saw the thing and the moment I looked at the circle I said to myself "It must expand or something". Sat on the tray, lied down and asked if my head would pop out the other end. "Yes, just close your eyes". So I did that, it stopped and I opened my eyes.....lmao im inside the most smallest space ever and panicked - I kept pressing the buzzer thing as I couldnt breathe lol

Its one of the smallest spaces ever, doesnt help being a big 6ft3 lad either.

My mom stayed with me, was in there for 20 mins then another 15 mins. Was meant to be 45 mins.

Yeah, I refused to do it when I panicked but I did it then, thank you mom lol

Was imagining the stories here like you and your baps but even that didnt make me laugh :(

Go watch the movie 'The Jacket', see how that experience depicted compares. : )

After that a MRI scan will be a walk in the park.

I've had one and it was pretty much like everyone else said, I kept my kit on and just had to remove any metal objects. The noise won't bother you at all its just the staying still with nothing to do thats annoying.

Earlier in this thread I said I was about to have one; I had it this morning. To answer one of the original questions, yes is was a case of everything off except boxers, even though the scan was only of my shoulder.

One thing seemed a little strange though. There was so much said, both beforehand and on the day today, that I must not have any metal objects with me at all - they even checked four times today. I was allocated a locker in which to put all my clothes and posessions, but then the key I had to keep was a metal one! I did mention this, and was told that I was the first person there to have commented on that. I guess most people have someone else with them who can look after the key. They even take precautions with the wheechairs - the one I had to use was a special non-metal chair, so why they haven't installed lockers with plastic keys I don't know.

maybe it was aluminium (or other non-ferous metal).

Had quite a few on my back, find them quite dodgy I tend to get very claustrophobic (sp) when i'm having them done. got half way in the first time and had to get out, couldnt cope with it.

They sometimes give you headphones to listen to music so you dont have to listen to machine banging away, was told to bring my own CD but forgot so they just put anything on. Had to put up with britney spears!!! was like a nightmare.

Hi Guys

Im due for one soon, and after reading this thread I am seriously worried, because I have recently discovered I am extremely claustrophobic (after my mate locked me in the boot of his car and wouldnt let me out). Is it as bad as you are all making it out to be? :(

yes, due to the physics involved, these things have to be constructed with a small bore (the bit you need to be in for the scanning).

I will wait and see how bad it is. Im seriously not looking forward to it now :(

They're expensive! My mate was refused one even though he couldnt move after a bad tackle. Anyway after many X-Rays (pointless) they finally gave him an MRI scan and it revealed he did actually snap his ligaments! Sorry old boy :o
