MrKnifeys Road to Racing - Build/Progress thread

Interesting read!

I was surprised they put you out in the M4 for your ARDS. Mine was in the 308 and rather dull, in fact I got told off when I got to Paddock on my first flying lap and it didn't want to turn in. I have no experience of a FWD car on track, so instead of fighting the car, I just let it run all the way to the edge of the run off on exit and scared the instructor a little. He told me that had I not driven well after that, he might have failed me for it :D I don't think I'd have lived that down, as it's nearly impossible to fail an ARDS test.

Good to see you progressing and getting good results really quickly!

I've always thought endurance races in the likes of C1s looks fun, I'd really like to give it a go some time.

Oh it was a real eye opener.. it was just a combination of things as well, never driven the car, it was raining and it was during a track day! Mental

I think being miserable is the number one prerequisite to work at Combe, so I'm not surprised.

The last time I did a track day, I was black flagged for touching the exit kerbs and then black flagged again for a little, well-controlled but unintentional oversteer through Tower.

The Marshal told me to calm down so I went back out, intending to absolutely send it in to Camp, only I ended up spinning instead :D They sent me home for that

lol, can't say I've found them too bad, been there a fair bit in the car and also the bike and not had any problems, even the odd slide in Tower but possibly not as much as you.

I'd imagine a lot of that depends on trackday operator as well? I've only used Javelin for car stuff so far and they seem pretty good...

Alots gone on through this Journey

Donnington Round 1 - 15th and a 9th

Oultan Round 2 - 4th and a 2nd

Donnington Round 3 - 3rd and a 3rd

Snetterton Round 4- Destroyed my new car

Oultan Round 5 - 3rd and a 6th

Ive also had another baby girl, so factor that in and its been a mental busy couple of weeks

Oultan Round 5 went ok, no testing as having a newborn put a stop to that, so turned up on a blind setup and went for it, Qualified 5th, achieved 3rd in the race. Happy with that! Race 2, got a mega start and led the race for two laps, then got passed by 2nd place, which in turn had all the others behind him and they went past me like a train, went from 1st to 7th! Managed to get back to 6th. Learnt a lot from that race! Had a really good weekend though!

Already put plans in motion for next year, im off to race MK3 MX5 Supercups! Cant wait!

Its a super competitive series, there are few better places to see where you really are as a driver, that's for sure.

I bought a Supercup car last year to do some cheap racing with a friend and looked into some Supercup rounds on the side, but new tyres every weekend to be competitive really put me off.

Fun cars, but they can be difficult to get the most out of. I never got a chance to explore too much setup wise with mine, but it was just a knife edge between getting it to rotate enough to be fast and snapping.

It was never boring to drive though :D

Update time

Went to Croft, such an awesome track! Really enjoyed it! However, Croft found the limitations with the front shocks with a few of us breaking them! Mine broke in qually, meaning I qualified 10th! Had a good race 1, go upto 5th then out braked myself on the last lap and ended up 9th! Second race I got upto 5th, was runing directly behind the front 4 and then my shock broke again! Managed to keep 5th, but dropped back from them!

on more exciting news.. Im racing MX5 Supercup at Donnington next weekend!

Forgot to do an update on this.

Mazda's went ok, big learning curve, best result in Supercup was 20th out of 40. I done the Clubsport trophy as well and finished 3rd in class.

As for the City Car Cup, I finally managed to get a win.

We raced Cadwell Park, never been there before so done Friday testing, I have finally managed to understand the best setup to get speed out of the car and this showed. Managed to qualify first, which I pulled out of the bag on the last lap of qually..went into the first race nervous as hell, had an ok start but got overtaken by Nic Grindrod up the hill, managed to get a run on him on the straight and get up the inside of him on the corner after that, then led all the way to the end!

Race 2, had a mega start but an error a lap in allowed NIC to get back past me. Tried him for 2 or 3 laps before I managed to get back past him again. Settled into a rhythm before the guy in 3rd place had brake failure and collected me on one of the corners. Ended my race, was pretty gutted as felt I was on for the win again. But never mind!

So I was first novice in the championship to take a pole and first novice to win a race.

Pretty damn pleased

What suspension were/are you running on the MX5? I'm on some horrible cheap tat at the moment but think Ill be upgrading to MeisterR ZeraCRD or Clubrace over winter.

Are they spec shocks for the Supercup?

I've got the MeisterR ZetaCRD's on my NC MX5 and quite happy with them, that's as a daily but also doing trackdays, sprints and hillclimbs in it :)

Great work on the win.

I'm told the MX5 supercup is hugely competitive with some great drivers, as are the other MX5 series. Guy at work is getting into MX5 racing - he's been pretty handy racing other stuff but he's struggling to get anywhere in MX5s !

Went to Cadwell Park yesterday, just for a trackday. First time back there in around 10 years - I'd forgotten just how much fun it is to drive there.

Supercup is mega mega competitive. Probably most competitive club level racing there is, I'll be genuinely happy with anything top 10 next year.

This year has been the first time I've been to all of the tracks I've races, Cadwell is great track, not a very good race track though.
