MS exchange server - rent/dedicated/managed?

Just go with hosted Exchange IMO, that's if you really need Exchange. There's a bunch of costs you aren't thinking about when you manage your own Exchange installation.

So what costs for inhouse exchange do people reckon

V

hosted exchange

V

rent a dedicated server/do it yourself in someone elses datacentre

depends on what you want feature wise.. if you want to do it inhouse then you have to take into account,

hardware/warranty
software
backup/restore
power/ups
bandwidth

hosted exchange comes with everything, you just pay per user, but you do have a limit on space/email addresses

rent a dedicated server, completely depends who you rent it from...

as a company i support/provide all three, internally when we rent dedicated hardware unless the customer specifies they want physical hardware we just create a virtual machine and we include our support with it, so its more flexible than hosted but probably would cost more too...

Presumably if you rent a dedicated server, it might be more secure but i would still incur the bill for software.

thats correct, you are renting space on a machine, what you chose to do with it is your bag...

Some companies will do packages like windows/linux hosting and you may find independent companies even doing exchange hosting, or as mentioned above other email management systems.

If you go down this route its always worth reading the fine print as a lot of places will restrict you from blasting out email campaigns and might have great SLA's but use terms like best endevours to sort it....

Well im still going to have to bolt on exhange to the server, which wont be easy as i dont have access to it?

You are worried about security, for obvious reasons. However, don't you think that most large scale hosted exchange providers are relativley secure too? They are all bound by SLA's and the DPA. They all have reputations to uphold and aren't going to be cobbled together, back of the garden shed solutions.

I'm not 100% sure what extra security benefits you will have over a larger organisation other than being small scale so flying low on the targetable radar, so to speak?

Since posting my original point I think if I were you, I would seriously consider hosted exchange over your own solution.
