Ms new console codenamed "phoenix"

I was under the impression that Microsoft's gaming division starting to turn a profit about a year ago? I heard it on Gamespot or something, I have no source, but I'm pretty sure they are. Don't quote me on that though.

They made a profit for a few quarters and as a year in general, but i think in total they lost around $4-6 billion on the xbox and early 360 costs. But this is for MS entertainment div, they dont have a games div like sony, there entertainment division consists of Games for windows, xbox stuff, zune, zune market place, mice, keyboards etc.

They started making money back a while ago, but they're still at a loss overall. At the rate they're going it probably won't be long till they're profiting from the franchise, but at present, they've lost money overall.

I love the completely pulled-out-of-an-orifice comments about each manufacturer.

Do you mean him or us? If you're referring to him then i agree.

Edit: I think Sony may try to do what Nintendo did with the Wii. As in Not go mad on improving the power and not improve the PS3 too much from what it is right now.

That's exactly what they're supposed to be doing - a sort of PS3.5 if you will. Increased memory but only 2x the performance CPU/GPU wise of the PS3. They've seen how Nintendo has raked it in from low-powered hardware. I think the next gen will see MS have the most powerful console by a factor of 2 out there.

I really hope both have 100% backwards compatibility. I've got a decent library of 360 games now and I would be gutted if they won't play on a new, more RELIABLE machine. MS should know they can't expect the 360s to last.

The differance is though Nintendo had a niche market, ie Family orientated games. Nintendo now have the audience people will just purchase the next Nintendo console and probably not look at the PS4.

Sony playstation need to get their pricing right and move away from the "Hardcore" but i have a strong feeling that they wont do that as Nintendo have the bigger market.

I'd expect them to bring out a new perhiperal (didn't they patent a gesture based system a while back?). I think they already disclosed they'll just use an imprved Cell.

Halo 4 and Gears 3 should be launch titles. That would be the greatest console launch ever.
Hmm I sort of disagree... seeing how disappointing Halo 3 was I reckon quite a few people will think twice before grabbing the sequel (If there is such a thing).

However, Gears of War has been noted to be at least a Trilogy, so a GoW3 launch title could be on the cards if the producers are willing to wait till the next XBox is released :p

Gears of War 3 for a November 2010 launch would sound right. There was 2 years between 1 + 2 so it may even be November 2011 if they want more time to play with new hardware.

I also think they'll resurrect HD-DVD technology but only as a medium to store the games. It would help a lot with piracy as there are no HD-DVD-R burners out there.

The NXE on the 360 to me, is aiming the console towards the family market too, whilst for the most part the games aren't there (they are coming now with the likes of Rock Band, Lips, etc.) they have the 'avatars' (Miis) and they have a much more family friendly/younger audience (with adult participation) dashboard environment as with the Wii. Unlike the PS3 which is running very much an adult/serious user interface.

I can see MS heading in the same direction as Nintendo after having seen how popular the Wii has been, but also with MS always trying to be better than their main competitor and not doing so well (Sony proof of this is with MS's HD and Sony's BlueRay) I can also see them pushing out a more powerful system with Sony doing as Nintendo have and pushing out a decent but not ground breaking system (afterall, the PS2 wasn't a huge improvement on the PS1).

I don't know, I think they've taken that one as a major loss and failure. The fact it's died now would spell disaster for them to try and bring it in for the next console, even if it is just for games. Consumers will see 'HD-DVD' and think 'oh, that is what BlueRay killed, I'm not buying that.' and kill MS's console market.

About all that MS can do to improve space-wise is work something out with Sony and get BlueRay on their console...but that too would be a major killer for MS with the cost of the licensing etc.

I can only speak for myself.

I feel under current global financial conditions that releasing consoles is not the best of ideas for families hard up for cash. I also feel that the consoles haven't been out long enough. I still feel there is life in all three consoles yet for at least 3 more years.

After what's happened so far Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can all improve on what they've done. None of the current gen consoles are perfect. They all have thier pros and cons...

I can't really speak for the Wii as I've never bought one but have used one and I do echo the comments about how it must be more powerful.

I have owned an Xbox360 and I loved it - I did not enjoy the lack of BluRay and the loud fan, but I enjoyed and the games I played on it till I got the red ring of death. I enjoyed parts of Halo 3 but felt there was no mental challenge to it.

I now own a PS3 and I enjoy the lack of noise and the blu ray functionality. It's pretty much identical to that of the Xbox 360 in terms of games.

Obvioulsy, both have their exclusives and 'essence' . As I said PS3 has BluRay, but that's kind of counteracted by Xbox's superior Xbox Live system which is very popular and successful.

However, those issues aside I do want to see something from Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony and game developers. I want to see original games. No more GTA, Halo, no more GOW, no more Tomb Raider - lets get something new out there and original.

I'm not going to say which I will buy just yet as that's just retarded. Lets see what the big 3 come out with in terms of functionality first.

Blu-ray will continue to be used by Sony. Only one or two games gave gone past 25GB and with quad-layer 100GB discs there is plenty of life in that medium for 2 more console lifecycles yet.

HD-DVD is not MS's, what a silly thing to say.

You know what I mean. MS used HD, Sony have and use BR.*

They wouldn't refer to it as Hd-DVD though anywhere - it would be a "proprietary" file system.

But somewhere along the line there will be users/reviewers that point out which format they are using, which could be detrimental to MS.

I'm surprised at that actually, mostly because with the 360 games are all on a 8.5GB disc, unless there are some huge ones on PS3 only. I get how PC games cane be bigger mind, as the disc is for compressed data only really, install and in decompresses to your HDD eating space.

*I'm relativly new to consoles so forgive me lack of knowledge on the matter, when I read up on HD-DVD and BR (years ago) it was basically MS owned/made HD-DVD and Sony own/made BlueRay.

The main thing to remember here is that the winning console will be the one that gets Full Auto 3.
