i used to have ms office on my pc but thinking of getting an alternative now as i can't afford it right now.

any suggestions as to what to go for? i need one that will read my current word and excel files.

Open Office is great. I have been trying Office 2007 which has brand new and confusing menus and toolbars - yuk! while Open Office is as near to older versions of Word and Excel as you can get without their actually being those programmes

The new ribbon interface on office is ten times better than that pap it used to have. Hate having to use 2003 at work when it's much easier to get done at home.

OP: Open office is your best bet. Your only other real alternative is Star office (I've only used it briefly on Solaris though), comes free with "Google Pack" - http://pack.google.com

I've converted to OpenOffice on Windows because I also use it on Linux and Mac.

Does everything I need :)
