Not in my experience it can't, or possibly it's 2003 that has issues I forget, either way I have come across the issue more than enough times for it to be coincidence.

Your experience is wrong, then. All versions of Office can open all formats previous to it.

personally i really like office 2007, it seemed a bit odd when i first switched from 2003 but now used to it and find it really easy and efficient to use...

Purchased on ultimatesteal deal as well which made it even better!
