Any suggestions on an alternative to Microsoft Planner? Something with better functionality for managing projects and teams, task allocation etc.?

Depending on size and budget:
- Trello can be used freely for the most part and is quite good at managing tasks, but may run out of steam if working in complex project environments
- Its bigger brother Jira might be a bit overkill and unless <10 people can get pricey with licenses
- Monday.com seems to be advertising a lot and looks great but I have no personal experience
