Isn't it only for tablets and portable devices though? Would be nice if they hurried it up for desktop.
Article said:We’re told that Microsoft is aiming to position Windows 8.1 with Bing as a free or low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users. Any upgrade offers will be focused on boosting the number of people using Windows 8.1. This Bing-powered version of Windows 8.1 may also be offered to PC makers as part of recent license cuts for devices under $250.
No, read the article:
Looks like PC users to me.
low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users
Free for Win7 users is meh.
Don't even want it Free.
Because "Faster/Better" is debatable
Objectively yes of course it's fast, it's a new OS and on almost all computers it is installed on it's going to be fast because it's still fresh and these days installed on an SSD. It has snappiness to it and things generally happen quick and it boots up a bit faster than 7.
In reality my 7 machine is also fast and feels it when compared to any new PC running 8 today, boots up in <20 seconds and is never slow. I don't have any use or benefit to be gained from the additional features of Windows 8 because I've already got what is useful in 7 either through 3rd party apps or by manually tweaking the OS itself so why would I want to sidegrade and go through the hassle of reconfiguring and reinstalling everything and then getting the software config backups back in order?
It really would be a waste of time doing so and only viable in a new OS which has things worth actually upgrading for.
For most of Microsoft's users yes that's true. For me I don't use UAC nor do I use MSE. BitDefender and everything else done manually so as above again, it makes next to no difference to my machines for 24/7 running![]()
I may venture back to 7 if this install of 8 goes to pot again... but then again I did make an image with Acronis so it would only take minutes to restore back to full health.
Still think windows 7 is great. Using Home Premium myself.
Dont believe MS giving anything away for "FREE" without them getting loads of $ for it.
