MS thinking of doing windows 8 for free

Sensible idea. They know as well as everyone else, out side off enterprise. They can't carry on charging large license fees. They couldn't compete with low med devices with large fees and people expect the OS to be free these days.

Isn't it only for tablets and portable devices though? Would be nice if they hurried it up for desktop.

No, read the article:

Article said:
We’re told that Microsoft is aiming to position Windows 8.1 with Bing as a free or low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users. Any upgrade offers will be focused on boosting the number of people using Windows 8.1. This Bing-powered version of Windows 8.1 may also be offered to PC makers as part of recent license cuts for devices under $250.

Looks like PC users to me.

Free for Win7 users is meh.

+1

Which is why telling people to read the article is hump. I read this on Tech News the other day and was going from memory, recalling it sounded ok but didn't really clarify what users are getting 'free' or low cost.

Most users would want a pro version to install from fresh, upgrades especially just from win 7 is the suck.

Because "Faster/Better" is debatable :p

Objectively yes of course it's fast, it's a new OS and on almost all computers it is installed on it's going to be fast because it's still fresh and these days installed on an SSD. It has snappiness to it and things generally happen quick and it boots up a bit faster than 7.

In reality my 7 machine is also fast and feels it when compared to any new PC running 8 today, boots up in <20 seconds and is never slow. I don't have any use or benefit to be gained from the additional features of Windows 8 because I've already got what is useful in 7 either through 3rd party apps or by manually tweaking the OS itself so why would I want to sidegrade and go through the hassle of reconfiguring and reinstalling everything and then getting the software config backups back in order?

It really would be a waste of time doing so and only viable in a new OS which has things worth actually upgrading for.

I don't quite know what to make of this report and it would not surprise me if it turned out to be wide of the mark.

"with Bing" implies that the current version of Windows is somewhat "without Bing" which, as anyone who has used it knows, is complete nonsense. Windows 8 comes stocked with a very decent array of Bing apps all of which already feature advertising.

So to what extent is this alternative version going to lock users into the Bing experience in order to recoup the license fee? Bing Maps your only choice for mapping software? Search only allowed to query Bing?

I'm not seeing this vast potential to monetize "Bing" without bordering on the absurd. They ought to be careful not to let Bing become a byword for intrusive advertising.

I do know one thing ,improved security over Win7 is NOT debatable, that is fact for Win8/8.1 ;) .

For most of Microsoft's users yes that's true. For me I don't use UAC nor do I use MSE. BitDefender and everything else done manually so as above again, it makes next to no difference to my machines for 24/7 running :p

I don't use Defender either but there's more to security in Win8/8.1 then that, besides as a gamer I'm looking forward to DX11.2 down the road http://www.techpowerup.com/186671/directx-11-2-exclusive-to-windows-8-1-and-xbox-one.html ,I could go on about other stuff I like in Win8/8.1 that 7 does not have but you can see I prefer 8.1 over 7 any time :),looking forward to Win9 as well :).

Yes things will change when DirectX 11.2 comes out and I said the same in another thread about Win8, where if MS do stick to making DX exclusive to Win 8 then fine I'll jump on board but until then there really isn't a need and where there isn't a need there isn't a desire :)

Windows 7 was the first OS that I legitimately installed once and didn't need to reinstall again.

XP used to bog down and eventually kill itself so you'd need to reformat/reinstall often, and now I've upgraded to Windows 8 it has definitely not remained as clean as Windows 7. In fact, I had to completely reinstall it all this week.

I may venture back to 7 if this install of 8 goes to pot again... but then again I did make an image with Acronis so it would only take minutes to restore back to full health.

You managed to bog down Win8 running on an SSD?

I'm impressed.

Still think windows 7 is great. Using Home Premium myself.

Dont believe MS giving anything away for "FREE" without them getting loads of $ for it.

I dunno MS is evolving and they need to adapt to survive ultimately, these days they would be better off with an agressive pricing model and getting people to pay smaller amounts more regularly (but not too regularly) than huge upfront prices that either tends to result in people wringing every last drop out of the software for 10+ years or pirating it. Theres a good reason why Windows 7 at ~£45 was such a success relatively.
