Catch is you can't use any SATA connectors. I could permanently boot via USB but would prefer not. Are there any bootable connectors for an mSATA which would fit into the PCI-E slot?

Basically I want a very small flash drive that will contain the OS with the other SATA connectors being used for storage only (the experts tell me this is best for a NAS server). I am seeking an alternative to the intel DH77DF mini-itx board which has an mSATA connector. I've been out of hardware for a while so would really appreciate any help provided.

mSATA's were designed to go into mSATA slots to reduce space needed for them, so trying to use a mSATA drive outside on the mSATA slot doesn't sound ideal.

On the lines of PCI-E SSD's look at the Revodrives, they are pricey but my god are the fast.

Hmmm, yes they are pricey. At that price it looks like the intel dh77df board may be the cost effective way to go. I am really surprised that other mini-itx boards don't have mSATA connectors to save space.
