Hi Guys I have iTunes installed for my Nephews iPod and just wondered if it's ok to disable it and Quicktime from starting at boot in Msconfig?

Reason I ask is I vaguely remember doing this before and had serious problems trying to get the iPod to sync and had to reinstall iTunes. Im not sure if this was related or not so wanted to run it past any iTunes users out there.

Thanks :)

Quicktime is needed for iTunes to work, therefore needs to be a present process while using iTunes.

If you disable automatic startup of Quicktime you will either have to manually start every time you want to use iTunes or it will cause problems for iTunes.

That's what I was thinking :( iTunes is a horrible piece of software imo. Could I disable iTunes in Msconfig but leave Quicktime enabled? Don't want to have to reinstall it again but I have quite a few startup items going on right now :D

iTunes installs all kinds of services! Bonjour, quicktime, ituneshelper. Unfortunately I don't think you can uninstall / turn any off without stopping the ipod detection etc :(

I have turned off all Apple start up icons and have no problem syncing any of the ipods. Give it a go! You can always turn the startup icons back on.

It works still if everything is disabled via msconfig. They are not needed to launch iTunes.

Happy days :) Have any of you guys ever looked to an iTunes alternative? My Nephew got an iPod touch for xmas (4th Gen) and I love the interface but absolutely hate iTunes. Only Apple could make a straight forward task complex. Maybe it's because I have only ever used MS software but iTunes has to be the most unintuitive piece of software I have ever used

iTunes is such an easy piece of software to use, it's not complicated at all, and I find it rather simple.
Many people think it's an over complicated piece of software, am I missing something?

No, you wont.

I have Quicktime and Itunes unticked in my msconfig list and am quite happily listening to itunes right now with no issues, disabling them has no effect on there function at all.

I also have Apple Mobile Device disabled in the services list, the only ones I have left are the bonjour service and the ipod service so I can share the music on the home network and still sync my ipod.

Conflicting information here lads. BinnsY can you confirm you have iTunes and Quicktime disabled within Msconfig without any problems? That is you can boot your machine and Sync your iPod without any issues, even though you have disabled iTunes and Quicktime from the startup group in Msconfig?

I have both iTunes and Quicktime disabled on startup and have never come into any issues with my iPods, iPhone or general use of either player.

Thanks for your input everyone. Much appreciated. Im going to disable iTunes and Quicktime in Msconfig right now. If it stops working, it's not my problem.... I tried to tell him to get an Archos... He wouldn't listen. I love Apple hardware... wish I could say the same for their software :D

iTunes requires Quicktime's codecs to convert the .mp3 audio format into the .aac audio format the iPod uses.
Google it, and you will see, it is on their website and on various other forums, I did so before replying to this thread.

I think they are put in the start menu just to quicken up the application start-up process. Infact that's the whole reason they are mainly there for in all applications. Some of them are system tray applications or applications for quick access. Most people I no disable everything except their anti-virus application.

Yep, I can 100% confirm that. I also have no issues converting mp3s etc with them disabled either.

Emphacy, whilst it may needs quicktimes codecs, it doesnt need quicktime to be loaded at startup to work.
