Having just found myself redundant I am looking to get a few microsoft certs while having some spare time during job hunting. Of course software access is now an issue now I dont have the work licences to use and abuse.

So I was looking at getting MSDN so I can set up a bit of a virtual lab for some SQL training. And then I saw the price....

Anyone know if there is anyway of getting MSDN cheaper? Some offers etc I may be missing? Otherwise it looks like a £400 cost just for OS access or £800 for full access!
 
It is a touch expensive - perhaps, as you are learning, you would be fine for the student discounts. Not 100% sure, even if you need a NUS card, but worth a go.

Don't really think there isa cheaper way into MSDN I am afraid :(
 
Ah well, £800 it is then (need SQL too really). Will come in handy, just prefer not to use up my redundacy pay so quickly!
 
I am doing the MCTS in SQL2K8 (well one of them anyway!) so probably need the full version, though I may just use the one that comes with the training kit to get me buy and just get the OS version of MSDN.
 
It depends really, if your doing developer stuff, then MSDN, however does Technet not cover your needs? It's about half the price of MSDN
 
Unless you need Debug and advance Beta copies, you could go with Technet online which is i think £200 + VAT for the download version.

If you must have the physical DVDs/CDs i think it's £400 + VAT
 
Looking at it Technet does seem to cover what I need, does it allow multiple versions of the same OS running? Access to HyperV? It is pretty much only the software I am after for training purposes.
 
IIRC, you can have up to 5 simultaneous installs of each OS with unlimited re-installs (So long as your subscription is active) but check the T&C

Do you need HyperV just for running them or is that part of your learning too, otherwise you could just use VirtualBox or VmWare Server/ESXi which are both free.
 
Most of these have 90-120+ day trials - why not get hold of those first? Seems silly to spend your redundancy pay on non-essential items :confused:

Bit of both to be honest. I am currently just a general Wintel infrastructure analyst, looking to specialise in SQL but a bit of VM knowledge isn't going to go amiss :)
