hi guys

posting from my phone so could do with some suggestions from others who are able to access search engines without the limitations of doing it on a smartphone.

I have an MSI x79ma-gd45 which I have had to bios update today to get working with my keyboard.

essentially i have updated the bios using the flash utitlity within the bios and now the system will not post.

this is the first time i have tried an MSI board and honestly, I am far from impressed.

upon restart, the system gives out six beeps and stays turned on. but there is no post.

tried all the usuals, clrcmos etc but nothing. can anyone come up with any other conclusion than the board being bricked?

as i say, first time using an msi board so open to suggestions.

I am guessing you have no working PC. But if you download one of the bios' you can rename it to "AMIBOOT.ROM" and then put it on a CD/DVD and then hold CTRL + Home on boot and it will flash it. It may also work from a USB pen drive (probably has to be formatted in FAT32 or even FAT16 :| )

Edit: wow, just googled that board and it seems terrible, one large US retailer has an average score of 2/5 for the board with lots of people complaining their board is dead :O

That may be a corrupted BIOS chip, not MSI's fault.
Did you use the utility or the manual update?

Found this rjk:

Errors indicating failure related to A20 line

Explanation: The system is detecting a failure trying to access the 21st address line, A20. This line is used to provide access to the high memory area, and is normally controlled through the keyboard controller.

Diagnosis: This is usually a problem with either the keyboard or the keyboard controller on the motherboard.

Remove keyboard and see if it posts?

Edit, also this:

Error Message:
8042 Gate—A20 Error!
Translation:
Your keyboard’s controller chip, a small micro-controller that provides low-level control intelligence for your keyboard to communicate to your main system, has a “Gate A-20” functional block on it that has failed to communicate with your host CPU.

Solution:
Try powering down the system, disconnecting the keyboard, and then reconnecting it again before you power your system back up. If this
doesn’t work, unfortunately you may have to replace the keyboard, although that’s not typically an expensive proposition unless you have a
really high-end model. Either way, this issue will probably come up only on older keyboards that may be ready for replacement regardless

That may be a corrupted BIOS chip, not MSI's fault.

I used the usb flash utitlity. without wishing to sound condescending, I have done this literally hundreds of thousands of times.

It's strange that the one time I use an msi board rather than an Asus or gigabyte, a simple bios flash using a proven flash utitlity completely bricks the board.

Remove keyboard and see if it posts?

Edit, also this:
right. good advise. I removed my keyboard and now it has no beeps. instead it just goes into a boot cycle and still doesn't post.

its my day off tomorrow. I will take my pc into work and buy the rampage gene like I should have done in the first place.

I may even set this msi board on fire.

make it into a tea tray!
actually i think thats a cool idea, u know how they use to make clocks out of cd's

if some1 goes on dragons den with that might just...tho wuld be a bit of a spikey teatray :p

badluck with the board...how do you rate the bios on msi? (when its working)

clunky, unintuitive, restrictive...

i would go on but it's not worth it. In all my time working with high end computer hardware on a daily basis, churning out 40%+ overclocks commercially on a variety of hardware, I have never had an issue like this.

I cannot wait until an MSI rep is in our office.

Don't be like that! MSI is awesome, don't burn it! Try to repair it. Use the flash utility which you load on the OS and then it goes to the BIOS, done it for me :)
Tell the MSI rep that T345 likes MSI

MSI

Maybe Something Incorrect

I feel for you rjk, the one and only time I bought an MSI board it was DOA, the one and only time I bought an MSI GPU it lasted a few weeks then started video corrupting all over the place. All the MSI laptops I've looked at (bar the Wind) have been woefully built too

I doubt I will be able. to repair a board by re flashing the bios if it doesn't post. to. start with.
Bit of a design flaw tbh

There is some hope here. Never got a BIOS recovery to work like that though. In the good old days you could just buy a preflashed chip and stick it in :(

Don't boards these days have dual bios chips to prevent such things as this?

Never been a fan of MSI, always seemed unprofessional.

To be fair I'm sure there are those who could tell a similar story of Asus, Gigabyte etc. motherboards.

For what it's worth I've had no issues with recent MSI motherboards.

+1

Me neither, theyve been rock solid for me
