MSI GS70 Enter Key Problem

So a couple of weeks ago the Enter key on my GS70 started playing up and would only register if I tapped on the far right side of it. Today it has just suddenly become very mushy and I have to press down firmly on it to get any response.

Incredibly frustrating. I'm studying abroad in Canada at the minute and come back in 4 weeks. Has anyone had the same issue and done a fix for it? I'm tempted to try removing the key and seeing what happened underneath but I don't want to void my warranty or anything.

Hope someone can help.

Laptop keys use scissor switches. They're usually no more than "snapped" into place on the scissor mechanism which is then snapped onto the laptop keyboard. You can use a plastic spudger to pry them off (or a bread knife if you haven't got a spudger). So long as you're careful you shouldn't damage the scissor mechanism. The only real way you'll damage the switch mechanism is if you go at it ham fisted and try and pry the key off in a direction it hasn't been snapped on.

This is the video I used to learn how to remove Macbook keys and the scissor mechanism for cleaning.

It's not much different for other laptops. Sometimes the scissor mechanism will come up with the keys, sometimes it'll get left attached to the board. An ISO enter key might use two switches though. It depends on how the keyboard was designed. I can't remember if the Macbook did as it's been so long since I did it.

Thanks for this it looks pretty easy. I managed to stop it being "mushy" by pushing down hard on it and it clicked back into place. However the left side is still unresponsive. Do you think it's worth taking off and having a look?

It might be. As I say, it might be that there's two switches under there and one of them has popped out. But you won't know until you pop the enter key off. Sometimes it's just one switch and they use the metal stabaliser that you find under space bars to distribute the pressure better. That might have jumped out of it's cradle and that's why it's not distributing the down press across the entire key.

HI RObbsy,

I would recommend you get this collected and repaired. please do not try to fix as this may cause further damage.

The failure rate on our kb's are less than 1% so it's off that you have had this problem. Either way, please contact [email protected] and get all issues that have have fixed. They will collect and return with no cost to you no matter what country you are in.
