Hi

First time overclocking my card using msi afterburner

I seem to be getting quite high overclock prior to artefacts or crashing relative to others I have seen on old thread

+220 core clock (1561 boost)
+400 memory clock (
Power limit max
Core voltage default

If I start adding voltage +20 I can get up to +450 memory clock before it gets unstable.

My question is

Is it worth the extra mem clock vs. The added core voltage
What isbworrh prioritising if I do increase voltage - core clock or memory clock
Is my oc prior to voltage changes average or good ?

What are you using to test stability? And what is the actual performance increase in benchmarks or ideally gaming?

And what are temperatures like?

These questions will inform your decision to go further or not IMO.

I've got an MSI Gaming GTX 970 and when overclocking I tend to hit the power limit before anything else, you can't put much extra into the voltage anyway so you don't have to worry about breaking it or anything. As said above temperatures are the main thing to look at.

It's hard to go off your Valley score because I don't know what settings you used, but when I over clocked mine I got it to 1501Mhz\4207Mhz so Stock Valley on Extreme HD was:
FPS:57.5
Score:2407
Min FPS:30.3
Max FPS:107.5

And after the overclock it was:

Valley +160/+700 110% TDP: (1501Mhz\4207Mhz)
FPS:68.0
Score:2846
Min FPS:31.9
Max FPS:128.4

Hopefully that gives you a rough idea, from what I've seen most GTX 970's seem to clock about the same.

I've just had a play about with OCing my Asus STRIX GTX 970.

I'm primarily using FFXV (very early scene at some garage - only just started playing) @3440x1440. So far seem to have achieved a +190 core +500 memory O/C. My results are approximately:

At +0c/+0m - 47 fps.

At +190c/500m - 55 fps.

At +0c/+500m - 50 fps

At +190c/+0m - 52 fps.

So definitely looks like more is to be had from overclocking the core than the memory.

I still need to play around with it, I'm not 100% convinced I'm artefact free, despite it being much easier to see them on a near static plain and brightly lit FFXV scene than it is on benchmarks like the Valley, where I thought I was fine at +220c (when I wasn't).

PS. O/C so far is at default core voltage with power limit% at max (120%).

Although the benchmarking ran fine when playing COD4 it crashed so I have turned it down.
Thanks for the core vs ram comparison. I'll pro leave voltage where it is for now as it's not going to make a night and day difference for me

I really wouldn't bother increasing volts, that's a sure fire way to kill the card either by accident or design, just max out the power limit and that will find the max frequencies your 970 can handle.

After a long time staring at FFXV, I had to dial it down to +180c/+420m to guarantee no artefacts. At this o/c I get a 14.1% increase in graphics score in 3Dmark (Time Spy) and a similar bump in fps in games. Temps have gone from 71 C to 75 C. Can't complain :)
