MSi h61 doesn't start up

Hi, I recently put my system together. I have built one before but that was years ago. Here are my components:

Antec p182 case
MSI H61M-P23 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION**
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz Dual Channel Kit
Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM (ST2000DL003)
Cooler Master GX 450W '80 Plus' Power Supply
Sony Optiarc AD-7280S 24x DVDąRW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

So I put everything together, turn the power on and get nothing. There is no response from the board (lights/ beep) and the power supply doesn't come on. Here is what I did. I connected the 20 pin power cable and the 4 pin power cable, I put the ram in, I put the cpu in and added heatsink and fan. I connected hard drive and DVD to sata slots on motherboard. Did I miss something? There were no case studs sticking out to short circuit anything. Am I right in assuming this motherboard doesn't need a graphics card?


I tried a different power supply (enermax 535W) but still nothing. I tried it with just the RAM, cpu, cpu fan and still nothing. I replaced the battery also.

I have a few thoughts:
*To work out whether it is the motherboard that is the problem do I need to press the power switch (power SW) on the case for it to give a response? Or would it be apparent that the board is working/not working (by lights beeps etc), even if I didn't physically press the case power button but just applied the power from the power supply? Is there any way to turn it on from the board and not the case power button?

*The guy from overclockers said to change the different parts. Unfortunately I only have a different power supply. Even if the RAM, CPU, hard drive or DVD was faulty I assume there would still be lights/beep etc from the board and the power supply would come on. Am I wrong to assume this?

Any thoughts?

Just turning on the power supply isn't going to start the PC.

The most you might see is some LED's light up on the motherboard (if there are any).

Have you actually connected the wire from the case's power switch to the header on the motherboard and then pressed the power switch?

If you've done that, and it's not working, then check you've connected it to the correct pins on the motherboard header.

May I ask why an i5-2500K and 2000MHz RAM but only a H61 board?

It seems a bit of a waste.

By case studs I assume you mean motherboard standoffs?

Did you actually fit the 6 which are needed?

You don't need a graphics card but the motherboard only has a VGA output you can use.

The power supply has a 24 pin connector (20+4) so I suggest you plug the whole thing in.

I was going to get an Intel Core i3-2120 3.30GHz but they had run out of stock. Why, what would a better motherboard give me that I am not getting with this current one?

Hmm, I think just 4 as there were no more holes in the case. But I did check that no case studs were sticking out.

The power supply has a 24 pin connector (20+4) so I suggest you plug the whole thing in.

Yeah I meant 24 pin - I did plug it all in.

You did press the power switch on the case?

A Z68 board would still allow you to use the integrated GPU while being able to overclock the processor and use RAM faster than 1333MHz.

Not that faster RAM makes a great deal of difference but unless you got a great deal you've spent ~£40 on 4GB of RAM when you could have spent £20 on 4GB or £40 on 8GB of "slower" RAM and not noticed the difference in performance.
 
The image below shows where you should connect the power switch.

FYI it doesn't matter which way you connect the power/reset switches. The power/HDD LED's need to be connected with the correct polarity.

 
OK will go and check that. My case doesn't seem to have any leads to connect the buzzer. Is it any of these?

Not all cases have a built in speaker.

If yours doesn't then there's nothing to connect.

AC97 - Front panel audio connector, but you don't want to use this one

USB - This should be a 10 pin connector with one pin missing. It connects to JUSB1, 2 or 3 on the motherboard for the USB ports on your case.

HD Audio - Front panel audio connector for the connectors on your case. Connects to JAUD1 on the motherboard.

1394 - FireWire for the connector on your case. The motherboard doesn't have FireWire so don't connect it to anything.
 
AC97, and HD audio are just......audio headers

USB is for....USB ports

1394 is Firewire

None of which are required to get the system running.

Looking at the diagram posted you say you connected the 24 pin power connector but have you connected anything to JPWR2?
 
Hi. Well you were right about it not being in the correct header. I mistook JSPII for JSP1 (JSPII isn't on that diagram you posted - it is to the left of JSP2.)

But now a new problem. It powers up , the fan starts spinning, I can hear the hard drive also, but then it stops and powers off. Then it starts up again, the fan starts spinning and then stops. And this repeats over and over.

(Yes I have the 4 pin power cable (JPWR2) connected.)
 
Clear the BIOS.

Disconnect the power supply from the mains, press and hold the power button for a few seconds to discharge any residual power and then remove the CMOS battery for a minute.

Then try it with just one stick of RAM at a time in one slot and then the other slot if need be.
 
I did what you said. I tried both ram sticks . One RAM stick does not work in both slots - same thing happens as described above.

The other stick works - the computer posts, it beeps once and it enters BIOS on my monitor - but only if it is in Dimm1 - closest to CPU), but it doesn't work if I put it in Dimm2.

While you can get into the BIOS set the RAM speed, timings and voltage manually.

Try 1333MHz, 9-9-9-24 and 1.5V.

In the Overclocking menu Change the DRAM ratio so that Adjusted DRAM Frequency reads 1333MHz.

In the Overclocking menu change the DRAM voltage from Auto to 1.5V.

Enter the DRAM Timing Mode sub menu and enter:

Command Rate: 2T or 2N
tCL: 9
tRCD: 9
tRP: 9
tRAS: 24

F10 to save the settings and restart.

Switch off and then try it with both sticks installed.
