MSi h61 doesn't start up

Which bios version do you have?

Surprised, there`s no option for 1.5v as specs state "Supports two unbuffered DIMM of 1.5 Volt DDR3 1066/1333 DRAM, 16GB Max".
You may need to update Bios for better compatability.

Perhaps try updating the BIOS if you don't have the latest.

The last 2 BIOS updates have included improved memory compatibility.

Whether or not that'll give you more voltage options...

The latest BIOS is here.

Update using the M-Flash tool in the BIOS.

As has already been mentioned I am rather surprised that for a new system you didn't go for a motherboard with a 'later' chip-set such as the H67 for example. If you received it less than 7 days ago you could still exchange it under the DSR if you wanted to.

Looking at the manufacturer's page for your board at http://uk.msi.com/product/mb/H61M-P23--B3-.html#/?div=BIOS it does look as if they released a BIOS update about a month ago, so you may not have the latest one.

It is supposed to offer 'Improved memory compatibility' so is probably a worth while upgrade.

You might find it easier to use their Live update tool, at the bottom of the page.

Ok. And if that doen't work?

I am thinking about what you said earlier. what do you think about sending the board and Ram back and swapping for a z68 and 16GB?

Good idea... if you can.

If you are building a brand new system, you might as well try and make it as 'future proof' as possible!

But you certainly don't need as much as 16 GB of RAM... 8 GB should be plenty!

We'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

Do you need 16GB?

You seemed happy with 4GB at the start of this.

8GB is plenty for most people.

Are you only using the integrated graphics?

If you are then you'd need a motherboard with suitable outputs for your monitor.

HDMI only:

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard REV 1 £84.98

DVI, HDMI and VGA:

Asus P8Z68-V LX Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.98

RAM:

Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £19.99

Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £31.99

I assume you have a 64 bit operating system so you can use more than 4GB?

I am leaning towards swapping the motherboard and Ram. Is it still worth updating BIOS?

Not if you've no intention of keeping the motherboard.

If you get a Z68 board you should be able to fairly easily overclock the i5-2500K to around 4.6GHz with an aftermarket cooler, something you can't do with the motherboard you have.

Did you buy the Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB?

I know you wanted quiet but that's probably the worst 2TB drive to be using as a boot drive.

I'd have gone for one of these:

Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM

Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Still quiet but much better performers than the WD.

Of the above, I think the Asus would be my board of choice.

Looks like a good idea anyway... swapping the motherboard & RAM, I mean! :)

No I got the seagate barracuda.

Yeah so I'll get
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £31.99
Asus P8Z68-V LX Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.98

Any idea which heatsink to buy? Quiet as possible.
Also my DVD drive seems quite loud. It is a
Sony Optiarc AD-7280S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM Sony Optiarc AD-7280S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.98
Any quiter ones you know of or are they all pretty much the same?

This cooler is always recommended:

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler £25.99

I've generally found all DVD drives rather noisy if spinning at full speed.

If you're just playing a DVD they should spin down after a few seconds and be much quiter.

Good choice on the HDD by the way.

The WD was a poor recommendation as a system drive.

I assume you'll be returning the motherboard and RAM under the Distance Selling Regulations.

Make sure you follow the correct procedure:

Under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you have the right to cancel the contract relating to your order at any time up to the end of 7 working days after the goods are delivered. To exercise your right of cancellation, you must give written notice to Overclockers UK by letter, fax or RMA WebNote giving details of the goods ordered and date received. Notification by phone is not acceptable. If you exercise your right of cancellation under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) after the goods have been delivered to you, you will be responsible for returning the goods to Overclockers UK at your own cost. The Distance Selling Regulations (2000) places a duty on you to take reasonable care of the goods once you have exercised your right to cancel. Returned items must be packaged properly and shipped in a plain outer box. Please try to include all internal packaging, cables, manuals, drivers and protective bags, however small. Overclockers UK will refund you within 30 days for any sum that has been paid by you or debited from your credit or debit card for the goods. If after exercising your right under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you do not return the goods as required, Overclockers UK may charge you a sum not exceeding the direct costs of recovering the goods. When exercising your right to cancel under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) please return goods to Overclockers UK (Esnet Ltd), 4 Axis, Millenium way, High Carr Business Park, Newcastle-under-lyme, ST5 7UF.

Hopefully you're still within 7 working days from the day after the day you received the goods.

You're welcome.

I hope you have more luck when you've sorted the parts out.

Being able to overclock the processor should help nicely when you're converting video.
