MSI Lightning 780 gtx Faulty - Need Help

You keep following me around and mocking my card failure, you have told me 10x theres nothing you can do hence why im asking somewhere else to try and get some other opinions or advice on possible fixes, hence why i posted here.

yeah i appreciate all your other responses, ill look into some newer cards, stupid that some tech breaks so soon especially after all the boasts and claims the MSI have about solid components haha, whilst you have some gathering dust still ploughing on after 5 years

How am I mocking your card failure?

I have a reputation on the forum for helping and doing all I can to assist and most people on here, my post count and my forum tenure will back that up

I simply said we can't RMA it as you were OOW and I said you could speak to the manufacturer to see if they could do a OOW repair but it would prob cost more than the cards worth.

I think Baileys got a fair point, your post could be construed as a dig at OCUK's customer support so i'm not surprised that he's pointing out that he's done everything he can to advise you.

Personally i would write a polite email to Msi asking if you can return the card , explaining how much you paid for it and how you would be extremely grateful (as a loyal msi customer) if they could at least take a look at the card.

Exactly this, but given your card is probably worth less than 100 quid now, I wouldn't bother and would just upgrade. There's some pretty good deals on 1070's right now for around £350 which would blow your 780 away.

Thank you very much :)

Exactly my point too, I am glad others agree

Bailey

ebay it probably fetch around £70 as faulty, buy a used 780 for around £100.
winner.

Don't buy used, never ever buy a used & don't ever buy from e bay either. Had a 770 gtx go wrong after 7 months ( brand new ) seller won't entertain it.

A chap in another thread had his Maxwell Titan die, he sent it off to some UK company and they repaired it for around £100. Here's the thread and here's the company he sent it to.

As for Bailey, I've only ever had good interactions with him. Considering that these forums also represent the OCUK brand, I'm not surprised he's commenting here with the facts. I appreciate you're ****ed off about your gpu dying, but people are just trying to help.

+1

It's a bad situation, very unfortunate for such an expensive card to die after such a short time. Repair probably isn't worth it, you could pick up an equivalent card used for £100-120 and recoup £40-£70 selling the card as faulty. Should you not be able to repair it yourself that's the cheapest option, otherwise it's buy a new card with a big warranty.

Yeah I'm looking into things and weighing up my options whilst trying to get further responses from MSI, they are stating that all returns of any fault related to stand alone parts such as GPU may only be returned by resellers and retailers not by individuals (but as bailey stated, they can't do anything to help as it's out of warranty by a year). That's the biggest kick in the nuts so far, having owned mainly MSI cards in the past with no ill results (luckily it seems). I knew what I was buying into by paying over the odds for the card only beaten by the titan at the time, that in a few years it would be not very powerful in comparison to new releases and definitely not cost effective. Maybe I should also reconsider buying MSI stuff in future too if the support is as bad as it's coming across so far, there is probably much better brands of the same cards out there but I am inexperienced in those. They claim the parts to be "military class, high performance and durable" etc, which seems laughable in this case.

I apologise to Bailey if I'm coming across as a crybaby etc, I'm just currently major salty as I've basically been left high and dry (not OC fault I know) and I guess I had no one to complain too. Definitely will not be buying high end cards in future if this is the sort of support MSI provide to customers, I don't remember coming across anything more than 2-3 year warranties at the time and I do remember doing some research into what to get as we all do with our purchases.

Thanks everyone for your help so far

You can get 4 years warranty with EVGA, pretty sure you can get about 4 with Gigabyte, 5 with Zotac so you have options.

It's simply not worth it, for the sake of £30-50 saving to buy something with only 2. That's how I look at it anyway.

Yeah I've never been one to skimp on things, I understand you normally get the support/help you pay for. If I could have got a longer warranty on the version of card I bought at the time I definitely would have but I don't remember seeing it, I did spend £600/650 on this overpriced card when i got it, I would have happily paid a bit extra for a longer warranty.

Lesson for the future I guess, now I'm stuck with onboard graphics which won't even boot half my games haha, some people do have to learn the hard way.

Just another quick thumbs up for Bailey, I have received help from him in the past and cannot fault the guy. If I need help with purchases made on ocuk, he is the person I ask for.

tbh if it was a lightning and wasnt overclocked then it probably had a sad life anyway :p they are born to be overclocked! not sit at stock :(

My 780 lightning overclocked like a dead cat. Couldn't get 1176Mhz @1.212v, plus it was a bit loud and hot for my taste so I sent it back.

Thank you for your apology and I do accept it.

If you were looking to get another card hit me up and I can look after you :)

You know where I am if you need me
