Hi, I'm building my first PC with an B650 MSI MAG TOMAHAWK with a Ryzen 7 7800x3d CPU.

I have been using PC****PICKER as a guide and got a warning about my motherboard needing a Flash BIOS Update for 7 7800x3d compatibility.

I will be ordering this motherboard sometime in December, possibly January. Because the CPU has been out for a while now, will a brand-new motherboards come with the supported BIOS right out of the bag?

Thanks a lot

Hi and welcome.

It's more than likely the MSI b650 tomahawk will have support for the 7800x3d ( bios 7D75v13 Release Date 2023-03-01 ) but even if it doesn't that motherboard has a bios flash feature so you can update the bios without the need for another CPU.

Thank you, looks easy enough, still slightly daunting ..
You'll be fine ,you should update the bios anyway there's a lot of fixes in recent versions so check what version your on.

Any further advice come back.

First boot on AM5 system can take up to 15mins to show anything on screen and can reboot a few times , this is because the motherboard is training the memory so be patient.

Enjoy.

I just used the flash bios feature for a 9800x3d. It was surprisingly easy and fast, so much so I did it a couple of times because it stopped flashing so quickly I thought it must have failed. All good though and no issues.

I wish I could tell you which bios my freshly bought Tomahawk came with but I had to flash it to get the 9800x3d to boot.

hi good day, also a person with the same motherboard and CPU.you said that by now the motherboards should be updated to the version that supports 7000x3d chips but my question is,when taking it out of the box how do I know what version it is?

Bios version is sometimes written on the motherboard or motherboard box (Google it) , but if it doesn't boot you know it needs updating. If it does boot then you can find out in the bios what version the motherboard comes with .

Almost all of the time, the BIOS is still the first version it booted with.

That being said, BIOS flashback will allow you to update it with or without a compatible CPU.

From my similar experience - I bought an MSI X670E Carbon from OCUK Black Friday sales and the box has a sticker on stating "AMD RYZEN 9000 DESKTOP READY". Didn't spot anything saying what BIOS was installed from the factory.

The BIOS it was shipped with was dated 27/05/2024.

I was installing an 8600G (stopgap until the 9800X3D stock/price settles) so wasn't too sure whether it would need updating first but with that sticker and the 8000G release dates realised it was likely compatible.

Worst case, as others have said you can use the other BIOS flash method first.

Ahh I understand, thank you.3 more things I'd like to ask .firstly, are the boot times as bad as everyone says it Is for the msi boards? Secondly, is the asus motherboard a better option (I was thinking the b650 f) or is that a no go due to the issue with the 7800x3d? Thirdly,do I need expo or xmp ram for the 7800x3d?

Boot times can be longer on AM5 usually due to the memory but you can disable memory training in the bios that usually helps. I personally don't think it's such a big deal if you can wait an extra minute for example then so be it.

Nothing wrong with Asus motherboards but it's all about get the best for your budget , what do you want to spend ?

You definitely want expo memory, 6000mhz C30 is ideal for AM5 but as long as it's 6000mhz your good.

Ahh i read something about that while doing research but some people had placed emphasis on msi being slow so that's why I was asking.

Honestly, not much I had an asus mother board on am4 and I liked it but i dont know if it'll be the same on am5 but I like asus it's just an extra 100 dollars.so it wouldn't burn out my 7800x3d you say ? ( I want it but I'm a very anxious person with these things and since this is my first build I want it to go well, especially since I spent a lot on it).however the reviews for asus looks very questionable in comparison to the msi one so im thinking that i might stay msi, asus one just looks really good but I want there go be no hiccups as these components are very expensive

Ok great I was going with a corsair set with that mhz and it's both expo and xmp

YouTube is a great source of knowledge if you get stuck but watch a how to build video and just take your time. Also the motherboard manual will walk you threw most of the build so definitely read it is what I advise.

Preparation is the key and if you can have someone with you when building can give you support.

You should also download Windows 11 and have it ready on a usb drive to install and windows keys a very cheap.
