Msi R5850 Frozr II "buzzing/fizzing" noise

For all those with one one the way be prepared for the 55 percent fan/hoover default setting ! Along with the fan noise, the need for having software running constantly to change it to an acceptable level and the fact mine seems to have gone kaput after 40 mins light use I'm wishing I paid extra for a different manufacturer.

This is the third thread I have read regarding RMA on the Twin Frozr. Given OCuk sold so many in such a short space of time it would be interesting to know what the return rate was on the batch. I'm fortunate to have received two that are working fine together in xfire, but I was wondering...

However I am all but certain this is not something Gibbo would want to publicise!
So yours dont make the fizzbuzz noise or produce lines on the screen ?

It's set to 55% on default, you can change it with a few clicks in CCC and that doesn't require any software to run.

Have you seen anyone else complaining about them? I don't have either of the issues you described even though my card is a crappy overclocker and seems to have a borked voltage controller.

A bit of fizzbox, but not as much as the Sapphire 5850 I had been using for a year, and only at one particular screen resolution...

a mate got this card the other day, I've just asked him, and he says he hasn't experienced either of the symptoms you describe, so I'd say RMA would be a good idea.
If its been less than a week since you received it you may be better off returning it under the distance sellers act,
that way you won't have problems with the issue not being easy to reproduce, or being borderline 'acceptable', but would notify them of the fault as well, in the hope that no-one else receives the same broken card! Good luck mate

It is cap whine, my 5850 did it and my 6950 does it. A different psu might help but if you rma it will very likley be just as bad.

If it is truly offensive why not post a vid with sound so we can actually know what it is like?

I've got the same "fizzing" noise issue with a MSI 5850 Twin FrozR. Also if you try running Heaven 2.1 and exit it while running benchmark, do you get a loud squeal for a few seconds?

I specifically got the MSI due to marketing about solid state components, and the desire for a quieter card. So the sound has been unacceptable.

I was getting a bit paranoid as my 4870 was doing it too. But it just seems to be a common problem across all ranges.

Ahh ^ these are a common problems you would find across the board with any graphics card... depending on the setup.

You can get that whizzing sound of any graphics card.. depends on the setup, also the lines.

These are just common problems found with any combination of setup that an be psu/mobo/gpu related i thinks... just OCUK sold loads of these so we are seeing these problems related to the msi 5850!

Are you sure the GPU is squealing or your PSU? I used to get bad squealing with a tagan PSU.

id rma it, it shouldnt make a lot of noise, card should really be pretty much silent apart from fan noise.

Ive had stuff make odd noises on me before, but normaly quite low volume

Is this something that is an exclusive problem forthose overclocking cards and cards that are pre-overclocked?
Owned a 5850 and 2x5870's and built 17 systems with a 5850 or 5870 in and have never heard of any capacitor noise issue at stock speeds.

Also I just (last week) built a system with 2 of these cards in for my brother and his are silent. (stock speeds and fan speeds reduced a lil)

As for the ""military" grade parts" stuff.. well that's just some nice sales spin. No better than any other reputable company in the parts they use and worse than some.

Either I have been very lucky or there are some people out there doing things wrong.

@ the OP
Yes RMA it. No way that is normal behaviour for the card compared to my experiences with that card.

This. I say about 80% of the squealing I've ever had has has always been from the PSU on which in my case is a Corsair 620w. I seem to of got it more with nvidia based cards (I've had 8800GT and GTX 280 on this psu) but little or no squealing from my Ati based cards ive used, (old 2900 pro and my current W/C 5850 direct CU).

Its not something I've RMA for mainly due to it never bothering me that much even when I was using speakers and also due to the fact the squeal (graphics card or PSU) might not show up in separate system.

EDIT: This is one of the early versions which I got after they first came out so god know how old it is 4-5 years ? so PSU age could have something to do with PSU/card squeal

got two 5850 frozr's and one of mine makes a loud crunching sort of whine almost like a hard drive. Only makes the noise at load but its constant. Could hear it above my pc which measured 54db a foot away (need a fan controller!) trying to rma it now. The other one however is silent.

I cant find any fan settings in Catalyst and it seems I'm not the only one having problems with this model.

Catalyst Control Centre --> Overdrive tab

Enable manual fan control and overdrive. Set the fan to 40%, enjoy low noise and reasonable temps.

If you overclock, set your fan profile accordingly in Afterburner after enabling Unofficial Overclocking.
