Hey, first post - long time guest viewer/creeper.

I bought an i5 2500k @4.5ghz a few years ago and decided to promote it to the office pc ;)

Anyway I've been putting together a new set up in preparation for i7 4970k(dc)
I decided I wanted an r9 290x, purchased the msi one that was on offer on OCUK this morning and after some research on the card it seems they have a problem with oil leakage.

Have I any reason to return the card before installation? Has this issue been addressed? I had went for the sapphire but I had my card details in wrong so it didn't go through and just went with the msi as I had a few other items ordered already with OCUK.

For anyone interested I have

- corsair builders 750w psu
-msi z97 gaming 5 mobo
-corsair 2400mhz 16g ddr3 ram
-intel 256gb ssd
-western digital 1tb Hdd
-corsair hydro 80i
-corsair 300r carbide case

TLDR - should I return the msi r9 290x in favour of the sapphire model?

OCUK have already told me I can return it, they told me msi were aware of the issue and that it was down to the grease on the fan bearings.

I'm in search of a second opinion/reassurance?

i think the early msi cards had problems with fan oil leakage but they are supposed to have sorted it out, i have the msi 290x gaming edition and been running for 3 months and no problems yet

I picked up one on the offer too.

Got a friend with the msi 270 gaming and 2 others with the msi 290 gaming who've all had them running at least a few months without any issues.

I wouldn't waste your time worrying about it, in the unlikely event something goes wrong down the line then RMA it then.

If you read the other threads you can see a OCUK staffer talks in there and there is no mention of any fix so far unless it was a ninja fix without an announcement.

There is more threads also if you use search.

I think the 'ninja fix' must have been the reduction of the sleeve bearing size from 3mm to 2mm and the smaller amount of oil in it.. By the looks of it they were trying to do a good thing which turned sour. As much as I want to accept this has been solved, there's nothing quite like costumer side reports
