MSI to offer 55% launch-day discount on P55 motherboards

those who ordered the GD65 won't be diappointed, best 63 quid you'll ever spend!

Dunno about that, I paid £55+VAT for an Abit BH6 which (for the time) was a cracking board. Heck my current board (Asus P5N-E SLI) while not the greatest cost under £60ex and has lasted me well over 2 years.

Don't get me wrong the GD65 seems to finally offer a cheap path into Intel's new tech alongside the i5-750 so I ordered one myself. But I think it only looks cheap compared to the exorbitant price we've seen on x58 boards (over £200 at launch and even now only down to around £125 or so at the bottom end). It's a decent saving but lets be honest here how many people would have rushed out to buy one at the RRP? The real value is probably something closer to £100 bearing in mind the other P55 boards you can get for under a ton.

At the end of the day it's cost me nearly £300 to upgrade thanks to needing DDR3 so in terms of VFM it's certainly not in the same league as previous upgrades I've done (BH6/Celeron 300A/PC100, P5N-E/E4300/PC5400) which both came in at under £200.

Well everyones circumstances are different £300 to some people is a lot of money where as to others it's money to spend.

The P55 chipset should last 2 years, thats even if you think of switching again then which works out 41p per day - I can live with that I think.

Come to think of it, waste of money considering it would cost me £180 for what I want from P55 rig I have planned but who cares lol. :)

A night out costs at least £50 if been to a nightclub, drinks, taxis etc probally a lot more depending on where.

A computer system is good value for money considering how much time people spend on them, sometimes I think why do people upgrade considering they spend nearly all night on OcUK forums.

I'm not disputing that spending money on a computer system may good value compared to alternate hobbies, more this specific offer in relation to other hardware upgrades that have been available in the past. The way some people are talking you would think it was bargain of the century, but I've bought 3 mobos in the past around the £65-70 mark which were perfectly capable (average overclock of over 50%).

I think this was really close to being a great deal for me but the fact it does dual channel DDR3 is a little spanner in the works, as I've had to shell out on new memory without increasing my capacity at all (getting 6GB would have kinda lessened the blow).

I totally agree with you; but did you get any of those three motherboards on the day that the socket launched? It's not bargain of the century by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an excellent launch day offer.

Expecting memory you've purchased two year ago + to last another 2 year + to be compatible with new technology is risky.

Well - I have an email telling me I'm getting one 'shortly'.

But I really would like to know just how 'shortly' shortly actually is.

Still no update for me which is annoying. Ordered at about 11.15 and still saying in warehouse queue.

Did they just not have them in stock when they were listing them for sale?

No ducky they didnt hence the pre order, still everyone thoughr theyd have stock in on the day and thats why we placed our trust in ocuk

To be fair, we firstly don't know whether they don't currently have stock as a result of a fault of their own or as a result of a fault at MSI's end. Secondly they did a fantastic job in offering those who were unable to get allocated a GD80 board another option; both the chance to step down to a GD65, and the option of getting a cheap Gigabyte board are excellent ones, and were not offered at any competitors. While it's a shame that I haven't got a shiny new MSI board in my computer right now, I don't have any qualms with OcUK's customer service.

I know that one major competitor didn't even put the GD80s up on their website.

Which, given all the time and effort and trouble this has caused OCUK, was probably a wise move

What I don't understand is the huge price of these and most other P55 boards as well. I thought this i5 + P55 was supposed to be the mainstream platform, to compete with Phenom II platform on outright price, and therefore kill it on performance per £. Yet, the mobos and the CPUs are priced high. I would hope to see P55 prices drop dramatically over the next 12 mths.

Edit: The base Asus P7P55D isn't too bad a price, once that drops below £100 the price is fairly sensible
