As the title says, just looking of the non crazy priced X99 motherboards at the moment, and features wise the MSI X99A SLI Krait Edition looks very solid, and there doesn't appear to be many reports of issues with MSI X99 boards (though that could be down to lower numbers of them sold or something like that).

Haven't used an MSI motherboard is a long time, so no idea how good and reliable these days. (or what their support is like)

So if anyone happens to have (or had) one of these let know what you think.

I'm about to start an X99 build and so I've been doing similar research, and I must say I found LOTS of reported issues with MSI boards. Particularly the SLI Plus.
I asked here for any opinions on the Krait edition as I couldn't find any reviews, but didn't get any response. (For the record, I couldn't find anything negative about that specific board!)
In the end I opted for an AsRock board - as I found several cases of people being happy with these after endless RMA bounces with the bigger manufacturers.
But until I actually get to try it I won't know if I've made a good decision.
Everything I'm saying is anecdotal of course so take with a pinch of salt!
Good luck with your quest.

That's interesting. I thought judging by what I'd found/read most people seemed to be quite happy with the SLI Plus, only issues when overclocking some memory which was fixed in a BIOS update.

More importantly I didn't come across any booting with USB devices connected issues that a lot of Asus users seem to have been reported.

Yeah, I can't recall any specifics about where these criticisms were made - but it was a definite cumulative impression I got after a couple of weeks of web research.
I do however remember there was a lot of complaining on the actual MSI forums from long-time MSI stalwarts - but again these people are likely to be the most vocal when things go wrong.
I guess all we can do is back a horse and hope for the best!

I do see people on msi forums complaining about the range of fan speed adjustment not going low enough. One said you can't set system fans lower than 50% speed which seems crazy.

My motherboard doesn't allow fan speeds below 50% either, MSI, but in fairness it's a budget H77 motherboard... I guess they still haven't changed it.

Yeah, the fan thing is annoying.
But most of the stuff I was reading was about actual board failure or at least interminable boot problems.
But if this stuff has sunk into forumoblivion then maybe MSI have got their act together with stuff shipped over the last week or two! :)

Maybe a Gigabyte X99 SOC would be the safest X99 option (less stuff on the board to cause issues lol).
Though I was wanting to have 8 DIMM slots so I could just add more later on.
And the krait seems really nicely specced (USB 3.1, M.2 32Gbs) for the price, and the MSI boards seem to do nicely in benchmarks being 'slightly' faster than most others. (Though I guess it could he in the margin of error)

Think my dilemma is, Asus boards tend to be very expensive for what they are, a lot have booting with USB attached issues and their support/RMA is pretty rubbish, so I'm not wanting to take the risk (even though the X99 TUF does look nice but it's also ~£280).

And on the whole, I don't want a motherboard with the killer LAN adapter, as they can be problematic, whereas Intel NIC's are rock solid.

I'm doing an x99 gaming build soon, and I'm 90% sure I'm going Asrock now. Partly from positive reviews I've read (they just sound 'solid') and mostly because my current build is on an Asrock z68 extreme4 gen 3, which has just been fantastic.

Yep, I eventually settled on an AsRock board too after research showed pretty consistent reliability.
I just want the thing to work!

Been benching and overclocking the past 24h with this MSI krait board.
So far everything is rock solid, ram running at XMP 3000 no issues and CPU overclocked to 4.5ghz at 1.235v (8h at 1.280v though) can't confirm with an 8h test yet but done a quick 30min tests seems fine. Failed overclocked doesn't lock me out as well on this board like a friends ASUS board.
I gives it thumbs up!

Still a couple of weeks before I'll be ordering so I'll be interested to see how you get on with it.

Been looking at the ASRock boards, and it does look like the Extreme 6 is a reliable board. Not a fan of the blue heat sinks though... Then I spotted the Fatal1y Killer... Lol
In fact I see there is also a version with USB 3.1 type C.

I don't understand why asrock don't do the same boards just with different coloured heatsinks options. The bright blue, red etc no doubt puts a lot of people off!

I'm actually warming to the red and pure black of the x99x killer though.

I'm the same, and more importantly while it has an qualcom/atheros killer NIC (which will probably be junk), it also has an Intel NIC, you could just disable the Killer one and not have any potential issues with it.

After a couple of days tweaking the new rig with sli krait.
It has been an absolute pleasure to work with, updated to the latest bios and is rock solid!

I have been using my MSI Krait Motherboard since last year December and had no problems however if I had to be picky then it would be the lack of a Q Code indicator.

just set mine up and hit a bit of a snag seems sysfan 1 or 2 wont power my 3 front case fans not sure whats going on other fan headers are working fine think its just not enough voltage ordered a powered PWM splitter see if that solves the problem other that that really liking it.
