MSI X99S Sli Plus - Display port not showing bios when overclock 'fails'

Hi,

So i've had this problem ever since I got my Typhoon from OCUK 6 years ago, but its generally infrequent and wasn't a big problem until recently.

Essentially whenever I disconnect the PC from power ( PC is already shutdown and i'm talking about taking the plug out of the plug socket to move the PC or replace a component ) and then say press the power button to remove any residue power in the system, reconnecting to power will cause the motherbaord to think the last overclock has failed. It then displays a custom start up screen before the MB logo screen and before getting access to bios. This screen claims the 'overclock' has failed and allows you to use alt+num or alt+L to load an overclock setting.

Unfortunately this custom screen will not display on my monitor when using display port. It does come up with vga or dvi or hdmi ( sometimes ) and I've no idea why. The problem is now i've got a new gpu that only supports DP or hdmi and so this is beginning to be an annoyance.

Does anyone have any recommendations to address this issue? Either the disconnection of power fooling the MB into thinking the OC has failed, or forcing the custom screen to display via display port.

I guess I could just not overclock the PC, but the cpu is getting pretty old now and though i'd like to get a new build that is proving difficult in these times. The overclock i'm using is the one that OCUK set up on the PC when I bought it from them, so it should be reliable and indeed its never gving me any problems on its own - it seems to be the disconnecting of the power lead that causes the MB to think its failed.

Did wonder if it could even be the PSU, though not sure how.

Any ideas?

What gpu are you using and what display ? The GPU may need a VBIOS update and also the motherboard may need a BIOS update. Also have you replaced the battery on the motherboard too as it is getting on that motherboard now and about ready for a new battery to rule out BIOS settings being lost when unplugged from the power.

GPU was GTX970 and is now a new 3060ti - so not sure why it would need bios update.
Never updated the bios as I didn't want to risk making things worse. I've followed various bios versions looking to see if the change list had anything related but never found anything.
As for battery - not a bad idea, though I doubt its at fault since this has happened since purchase 6 years ago and it never seems to lose any other settings like date & time.

Frankly I was hoping for ideas that didn't involve updating the bios as its a work machine and I simply can't risk bricking it at the moment. Though I don't really know what else one could try to deal with this and a bios update does sound like the first goto to try. The fact that the screen is not shown via display port is weird though, especially as the rest of the bios does.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions they are appreciated.

@noisecrime Your board has built in dual bios.

There is an A/B bios selection switch towards the lower right hand corner of the board and also a led which lets you know which one is currently selected (Blue=A - Green=B)

If you power down and switch to the bios currently not being used, you can then power back up and proceed to update that secondary bios. If that doesn't fix the issue, you'll still have the option to power down and switch back to the original.
