MSI Z68A-GD65 overclocking problem

Hi Guys

I built a new pc yesterday and it's all be reasonably straight forward until I tried to overclock my CPU. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, I have read a ton of guides for OC'ing my i5 2500k but nothing seems to be working.

My Problem is that I try and change the CPU Multiplier and save and reboot, but on restart the Multiplier will go back to its default value of 33 - I have tried changing this many times, also changed it inside the operating system and it won't budge. Is this a fault with the CPU, Motherboard or am I missing a crucial setting to making this work?

My mobo is the MSI Z68A-GD65, Also when using OC Genie it says that the multiplier is set on 42 but on CPUZ my core says at 3300.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Download CPU-Z and Prime95.

Now when you run Prime95, what does CPU-Z report the core clock to be?

I ordered the 2500k and I'm 99% sure that it is the 2500k that got delivered but I will need to double check, I will also download Prime95 as you suggested. I'm at work at the moment but I will report back later. Thanks for your help :)

Here is a screenshot of Prime95 and CPU-Z, I also put speedfan on to see temps, please ignore the HD temp, that is not accurate, guess the sensor is wrong.

So as you can see it is the 2500k and also I have booted it with OC Genie which states it should be running at 4.2 which it clearly isn't.

Thanks for you time.

I had this problem on a GD80 G3, turn off spread spectrum and make sure you are using intels power management rather than msi's.

Not at home yet so can't remeber the uefi screen needed.

Intel turbo boost - disabled, try enabled then the OCgenie button and then see what the core clock speed is with prime.

Same as before.

I enable OC Genie so that the multiplier is set to 42 (automatically) and then once I save and boot into windows, the multiplier is set back to 33...

I have also tried overclocking manually through videos on youtube and guides, the Multiplier keeps coming back to 33.

I have never flashed BIOS before but it looks reasonably easy, will try this later. If that doesn't fix things would you say the motherboard is faulty?

also try a clear cmos so all the settings are back to default in the bios, then try the ocgenie.

As I mentioned in another thread, the release bios is no good at all. The latest official bios is nearly perfect, a few minor problems and the multiplier not showing in the bios but go in and out of the page and it appears.

Thanks for that, I'm hoping this will fix my problem. I will try the non-beta BIOS first then try the beta if it still has problems.

I've been telling my self I will need to go through returning items but hopefully I won't need to go through the hassle.

I will get back to you guys later, thanks again :)

I had this issue too. The fix was to reflash the bios again (same bios for me). It then allowed me to change the multi and maintain on restart. To flash the easiest way is to download the bios onto a USB, enter bios and flash from the USB.

I agree, on the MSI forums they say it isn't the best method but it works for me.

I love the CMOS button on the motherboard backplate, so easy to clear the settings just press for 5 seconds and done, so much easier than taking the battery out etc. :)

Thank you all so much, flashing the BIOS has fixed this!

I hope anyone else having problems will find this thread.

Cheers :)

Nice one. There will be a new official release bios within a few weeks 23.2 it's currently at beta 3 stage. :)

This is my first MSI motherboard, and I am happy with the support they provide and the forums are not as bad as people think moderator wise, good forums.

Thanks all and particularly Nelly for the information. After a frustrating couple of days I found this thread, updated my bios to the latest beta, and am now running my new MB and my 2500K at 4.5G at 1.3V vcore. I haven't stress tested it properly yet though :)

Cheers

Paul.
