msn messenger remote assistance

Im trying to get MSN messenger remote assistance to work on mine and my aunties computers,we can chat through MSN messenger but when she requests remote assistance and i accept it starts to connect and then i get a message saying cannot connect,we both are on bt yahoo broadband,both have a bt voyager 205 adsl router and both have xp home,if anyone could help i would appreciate loads,thanks.

Yes we do,i was told i have to open port 3389 because we both have routers,is this correct??

I may be wrong, but I have always been under the impression that one of you - ie the person helping - needs to have XP Pro.

Ahh MSN Messenger. Sorry must have blanked that bit. To be honest I dont know anymore! AHHHH! lol

Dont use it that often, but its a great service, you download a little application to run on the host PC (like your Aunts) and login through the web. Dont have to remember IP's etc and its passworded. Also it doesnt have to run on startup, just when you ask her too.

I've used VNC/logmein/putty/terminal services for ages but I still can never get MSNs or XP's remote assistance working lol.

try using windows messenger

Don't you first have to enable it in services.msc? I have never used it so i don't know.

right click my computer, go to properties, and then go to the "remote" tab. make sure both boxes there are ticked. one isnt ticked by default. Also, in some cases, yes, you need to forward ports on your routers fire wall.

here is a complete guide for your router to forward the ports neccessary for remote desktop

I have got her to install logmein and it works a treat,cheers for the help guys.
