Lo all,

I need a new front brake cable and some new handlebar grips for my Raleigh Apex mountain bike. It was a good bike back in it's day and has served me well so now as the weather has cleared up a bit I'm going to start cycling to work again.

I shall be purchasing from wiggle.co.uk as they are top notch and always deliver quickly.

I can't find a pic of the bike but the brake splits off in to to almost like an 'A' either side of the wheel.

I'm not spending a lot I just want something that is half decent. I will only be using it until the end of the year at most. It depends how long this fitness kick lasts.

Can anyone recommend me a front brake cable and handlebar grips to fit my bike? It's a purpley / red colour if it matters.

that is what my brakes are like.

Any brake cable should do, where the cable splits into 2, one side will be the brake cable pulling through to be clamped, the other side should be fixed to the split. Double check though.

As for grips, lizardskins have always been comfy for me, or yeti's. Lock on's are great too as they are easy to get on / off.

Highly recommended by all MTB Mags and websites.

Make sure you get the bonus kit that comes with the bolts and lockon stuff :)

Right lads, I need a bit of help. Either I'm being a thicko or just got the whole thing wrong.

I've got the brake cable, I've fed it through the tube down to the front wheel and fed it down to the splitter, out one side and attached it to the brake. I've hooked in the other side and tried the brake.

It's all floppy and doesn't even get anywhere near the rim. The cable isn't tight like I'd expect. What am I doing wrong?

I noticed the circular part of the splitter (the alignment on the pic above) is resting on my reflector.

I wish I never took my brake to pieces now :( :o

Any help?

Need to adjust the brake. Basically slacken off the cable clamp on the brake and pull more cable through until the pads are ~4mm or so off the rim, then tighten the clamp again.

See the right brake arm? Its the allen key (either 4 or 5mm iirc- not worked on cantis for a long time) on the top. Undo that and pull the cable through a fair bit more with pliers before tightening it up, thus taking up the slack in the cable.

Might be worth taking it to your local bike shop though, brakes are one thing you want to be 100% on and it'll be a 2 minute job (if that) for them.

while we are here and that pic is there can anyone suggest where i can buy one of those type of cable hangers ?

am thinking it could work smoother than the prehistoric one on my bmx

the bit with alignment wrote on it is what im on about btw
